BAYLOR SOCCER HOSTS NATIONALLY-RANKED TEXAS A&M AND TEXAS

WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team opens Big 12 Conference play this weekend, hosting a pair of nationally-ranked foes as the Bears face No. 12 Texas A&M on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7:00 p.m. before a rare Sunday night match against Texas at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 24.

"We are extremely excited about opening up Big 12 Conference play against a pair of in-state rivals," head coach George Van Linder. "Although we open up with two of the top teams in the conference, we are excited about facing them in front of the home crowd. I know the team is anxious to play and see if we can build off of the momentum from last weekend."

Baylor enters the weekend with a record of 3-4-1 on the season after blanking UT-San Antonio and Samford last week. The Bears, who enter the weekend with a six-game, home unbeaten streak, are 3-0-0 at Betty Lou Mays Field this season.

Although Texas A&M enters the contest sporting a record of 4-3-1, the Aggies have faced one of the toughest schedules in the country. All of the Aggies blemishes on their record have come against nationally-ranked teams as Texas A&M handed No. 3 North Carolina a 1-0 loss to open the season.

Ashlee Pistorius leads the way for Texas A&M with four goals and two assists on the year while Kristin Arnold sports a 0.78 goals against average in net for the Aggies.

Texas enters the weekend winners of three straight as the Longhorns knocked off Nicholls State and Cal State Fullerton last weekend. The Longhorns are led by Kelsey Carpenter who leads the team with seven goals and one assist on the season. Dianna Pfenninger holds a 1.11 goals against average and has recorded one shutout on the season.

Texas A&M leads the all-time series with the Bears 6-4-1 while Texas holds a slight 6-5-1 edge all-time against Baylor. The Aggies have won three straight in the series while Texas' last loss to Baylor came in 2004 when the Longhorns lost to the Bears, 2-1 in overtime.

WORKING THEIR WAY UP THE CHARTS

With only two seniors and 13 newcomers to this year's squad, only a few players on this year's roster have found their way onto the career record books. However, there are a few players on the 2006 roster making their way up the charts. Most notably, junior goalkeeper Ashley Holder, who currently ranks second on the career saves list with 260 for the season.

Notable records:

Career Points: Anna Schuch (t-8th, 33)

Career Goals: Anna Schuch (12, 7th)

Career Multi-Goal Games: Anna Schuch (1, t-9th)

Career Game-Winning Goals: Anna Schuch (t-4th, 4)

Career Shots: Anna Schuch (9th, 86)

Career Saves: Ashley Holder (2nd, 260)

Ashley Holder PICKS UP BIG 12 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR

Baylor junior goalkeeper Ashley Holder has been named Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performances this past weekend the conference office announced Tuesday. The honor marks the second time the goalkeeper has been named player of the week during her career and is the first time a Baylor player has been honored this season.

Holder put in a strong performance against UT-San Antonio and Samford as the junior recorded consecutive shutouts as Baylor posted a pair of 1-0 victories. The consecutive shutouts were the first for a Baylor soccer team since the Bears blanked Colorado (3-0) and Texas Tech (7-0) in 2001.

Holder made four saves in the victory over the Roadrunners and added five saves in the win over Samford as the junior has not allowed a goal at home this season. With the victories, Holder pushed her career shutout total to six, third on the Baylor all-time list, as she has posted a career-high three shutouts this season.

The honor marks the second time Holder has been named Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week during her career after she earned the distinction following her performances against Texas and Texas A&M during her freshman season in 2003.

Ashley Foster of Texas was named Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week as Kristin Andrighetto of Missouri was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week.

BETTY LOU MAYS FIELD KIND TO BAYLOR

The home pitch has been kind to the Baylor soccer team as the Bears enter the weekend riding a six-game unbeaten streak at Betty Lou Mays Field. After defeating UT-San Antonio and Samford by identical scores of 1-0 last weekend, Baylor extended its unbeaten streak to six dating back to a 1-0 loss to Nebraska on Oct 7, 2004.

So far this season, Baylor is a perfect 3-0-0 on the home turf as the Bears have won every game this season at Betty Lou Mays Field by the score of 1-0.

NEXT TIME OUT

Baylor will open continue Big 12 Conference play as the Bears host Iowa State on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:00 p.m. to close out a five-game home stand.
