Men's Tennis' Galic Advances to Quarterfinals in Midland

Midland, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis' David Galic won two singles matches on Friday at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, to advance to the tournament quarterfinals.

Galic posted a decisive win over UCLA's Ahmed Ismail in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore Attila Bucko won his first-round match as well with a 6-3, 6-5 triumph over Paul Koeneke of Boise State.

The currently unranked Galic, notched his second victory of the season over a ranked opponent with a round of 16 win over 75th-rated Claudio Christen of Arizona, 7-6, 6-3. His other triumph over a ranked opponent came in the Baylor Invitational when he downed 37th-ranked Conor Pollock of Texas A&M in the round of 32. Bucko was eliminated from the competition when he dropped a round of 16 match to Texas A&M's Chris Chirco, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

In doubles action, Galic and Bucko, playing together for the first time this season, posted an 8-3 win over Vishnu Rajam from Rice and Josh Zavala from Texas.

Head coach Matt Knoll accompanied four players to the Charles Fluitt Invitational, held at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on the UK campus in Lexington. Action will begin on Saturday, Oct. 13 and run through Oct. 15.

In first-round action Saturday morning, freshman Jordan Rux will face Tulsa senior Will Gray. A victory by Rux would pit him against Kentucky's Bruno Agostinelli in the round of 16. Baylor's three other participants, Dominik Mueller, Matt Brown and Denes Lukacs, received first-round byes and will begin action in the round of 16. Mueller, a sophomore ranked No. 61, will take on Florida's Nestor Briceno, a junior currently ranked No. 91. Brown, a junior ranked No. 110, faces the highest-ranked player among Baylor's first-round opponents when he takes on 69th-ranked Davy Sandren, a freshman from Tennessee. Lukacs, a sophomore ranked No. 78, draws freshman and 108th-ranked JP Smith of Tennessee. Tennessee is coached by former Baylor assistant coach Sam Winterbotham.
