TULSA, Okla. - Sophomore Denes Lukacs won his round of 64 match in the qualifying draw on Tuesday at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center and needs just one more win to advance to the tournament's main draw.
Lukacs, the only Bear to advance to the third round, downed Amrit Narasimhan of Memphis 6-4, 6-3 to move on to the round of 32. He will now take on Rice's Christoph Mueller who blanked Lenny Gullan of North Carolina 6-0, 6-0. The Lukacs/Mueller match will begin at 9 a.m., on Wednesday.
The Bears' Matt Brown and Jordan Rux were defeated in the round of 64. Brown, ranked No. 110, fell in straight sets to Benjamin Carlotti of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3. Carlotti was the qualifying draw's No. 9 seed and ranked No. 56 nationally. Rux battled 81st-ranked Ralph Knupfer of Rice for three sets before falling in defeat 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
In consolation action, 61st-ranked Dominik Mueller posted a 7-6(5), 6-2 triumph over 76th-ranked Marc Rocafort of Middle Tennessee State.
Doubles play began on Tuesday and both Baylor duos were eliminated from the tournament. David Galic and Rux took on Southern California's Jack Levis and Gary Sacks but were edged out 9-7 in the first round. Brown and Mueller took down the draw's No. 4 seed, Sam Chang and Maciek Sykut of Florida State 8-6. However, in second round action, the tandem lost to East Tennessee's Enrique Olivares and Sebastian Serrano, 8-6.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2007-08 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
This year's event is being hosted by the University of Tulsa for the third straight time, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center - site of the 2004 and 2008 NCAA Championships.
