Tarleton State shot 58 percent (14-of-24) from 3-point range en route to a 95-85 exhibition win over Baylor at the Ferrell Center in Waco on Friday.
"Tarleton is a very good team," head coach Scott Drew said. "This is a very good thing for us, not that we lost the game and executed poorly, but it gives us an idea of what we need to focus and improve on before we start playing the games that count."
Junior Henry Dugat and freshman LaceDarius Dunn led the way for Baylor as each scored 20 points. Junior Kevin Rogers added 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior Curtis Jerrells added 16 points.
TSU was led by senior Jefrey Hanfield who scored a game-high 28 points. Senior guard Avery Patterson registered 23 points, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, while junior Eric Williams added 12 and sophomore Dan Eichel chipped-in 10 points.
The Texans hit seven of their first eight 3-point attempts of the second half to stretch their lead to as many as 16, and finished the stanza going 8-of-10 from behind the arc.
Tarelton State jumped out to a 12-2 lead, but the Bears battled back to take a 21-18 advantage on a Dunn 3-pointer. Baylor stretched the lead to as many as eight (32-24) but the Texans went on a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead with 4:31 to go in the opening stanza. The two teams, which combined for 12 3-pointers in the first half, exchanged baskets the rest of the half and TSU took a 45-42 lead into the break.
The Bears shot 36 percent (12-of-33) from 3-point range and were out-rebounded 41-31.
Baylor will next be in action as it hosts its final exhibition game against Jackson State on Sunday Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center in Waco.
