WACO, Texas - Whitney Zachariason, a 6-2 forward from Little Rock, Ark., is transferring to Baylor from the University of Arkansas and will begin classes in January, head coach Kim Mulkey announced today.
Zachariason, a 2007 Central Arkansas Christian graduate, had a successful high school basketball career during which she scored 2,922 points, hauled down 1,206 rebounds and led her team to a 142-12 record. She led the Mustangs to three state championships and was named MVP of all three state tournaments.
En route to earning Arkansas' Gatorade Girls' Basketball Player of the Year honors as a senior, Zachariason averaged 28.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. She was named Ms. Basketball Arkansas in 2006 and `07 and earned first-team all-state honors as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Zachariason left the Arkansas squad in early November after playing in two September exhibition games in Canada.
"We are excited to have Whitney join our program," said Mulkey. "Whitney is a champion, she has known nothing but success throughout her basketball career. She has a tremendous work ethic, putting in the hours necessary in the gym to work on her game. She has post player size, but the ability to face the basket and hit the three."
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to go to Baylor University to play basketball for Hall of Fame Coach Kim Mulkey. It will be a real privilege for me to play with the great players that she brings to her program. I plan to work very hard to reward Coach Mulkey for her faith in me as a player," said Zachariason.
