COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's equestrian team wrapped its regular season in College Station, Texas, as Texas A&M hosted the first-ever Big 12 Classic tournament. The Bears fell to the Aggies in first round action 12-4 but bounced back to defeat Kansas State 11-4.
"We nearly shut out Kansas State so we really did well today. Everybody rode super well and we got two MVPs so we were excited. If we ride like that at Nationals, we will be ready to go. If we just get focused, we're ready," said head coach Ellen White.
Against top-seeded Texas A&M Baylor picked up four points, two in Western and two in Hunter Seat. Ashleigh Brown earned a Horsemanship point with her 71.5-point ride while Madelyn Mooney posted a 70.5-point score, enough to earn a BU point in Reining.
For the Hunter Seat portion against the Aggies, Nicole Brown rode for a 78-point score and a point in Equitation on the Flat. Mary Smitson also earned a Flat point with her 68-point ride for the Bears.
In round two action, Baylor faced Kansas State who previously lost to Oklahoma State in the first round. Baylor rode with greater success against the Wildcats in both disciplines and earned two MVP awards. Allison Orosz's 77-point ride in Horsemanship was enough for the MVP honor as was Nicole Brown's 83-point ride in Equitation over Fences.
A. Brown and Mooney tallied points for the Bears for the second time during the tournament. Orosz and Valtie Riddle's points game Baylor the 4-3 Western edge for Baylor.
In Hunter Seat, Baylor captured seven of the possible eights points, outscoring Kansas State 7-1. N. Brown's MVP Fences ride gave Baylor a point and Smitson, Shelby White, and Beth Banister also earned Fences points. On the Flat, Brown, White and Cara Wilson recorded points.
The tournament conclusion ends Baylor's regular season action. The riders will return to action April 18-20 as Baylor University and the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex host the 2007 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
