Baylor's equestrian team opened its 2007-08 season on Sunday, Sept. 30, with a loss to the University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs. The event, held at the Willis Family Equestrian Center, saw Georgia tally 16 points in the victory while Baylor scored eight.
Georgia posted an 8-4 triumph in English discipline, winning Equitation Over Fences 4-2 and Equitation on the Flat by the same score. Baylor's Beth Banister (Brighton, Colo.), a sophomore, and sophomore Mary Smitson (Zionsville, Ind.) each earned points for Baylor in Equitation Over Fences with scores of 82 and 76, respectively. Baylor junior Nicole Brown (Zionsville, Ind.) earned MVP honors in the event with a score of 85.
In Equitation on the Flat, Brown and junior Shelby White (Waco, Texas) each tallied points for the Bears with 80 and 71 point rides, respectively. Georgia senior Kelly Bonau posted a score of 90 to earn MVP honors.
In Western discipline the Bulldogs again posted an 8-4 victory margin. In Horsemanship, Georgia took five of the six points. Baylor's lone point came from sophomore Allison Orosz (Salem, Ore.) with a score of 72.5. Georgia's Lauren Love, a sophomore, was named MVP of Horsemanship.
Reining was a much closer competition with the teams splitting, earning three points each. Baylor's Madelyn Mooney (Riverside, Calif.), a sophomore, was the event's top scorer with 74.5 points to take MVP honors. Also gaining points for the Bears were sophomores Lindsey Tomko (Canfield, Ohio) and Valtie Riddle (Tucumcari, N.M.).
"Georgia is a strong team and always has been. It was a challenge for us to go against them in the season opener. It showed us where the bar is set. We made some mistakes but that's how we get better, by learning from our mistakes," said head coach Ellen White.
Baylor will now take to the road for back-to-back matchups against Kansas State and Oklahoma State. The Bears will take on Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., on Friday, Oct. 13, then tangle with Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday, Oct. 13.
