WACO, Texas- Baylor men's tennis began play in the Charles Fluitt Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The Bears started off slow, but came back in the afternoon session and will continue play on Sunday.
The Bears struggled early in play as Christian Hansen of Tennessee defeated Julian Bley 6-0, 7-6(4). No. 4 seed Boris Conkic, also from Tennessee, downed Jurica Grubisic 6-1, 7-6(5). Play picked up for Baylor when No. 2 seed Denes Lukacs beat Doug Matthews of Xavier 6-4, 6-1.
In second round action Bley overcame Bryan Swartz of Tennessee 6-3, 6-1. Jeremy Tweedt of Tennessee beat Grubisic 7-6(6), 7-6(6). Lukacs defeated Matt Brewer of Tennessee 6-1, 6-2.
"The competition was tough today," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Our young guys went 0-4 in tiebreakers and that made all the difference. We were not able to execute the way we wanted to in key situations. We'll learn from today's close matches and will get better."
Play will continue Sunday, November 2 at 8:30 a.m.
