Despite sweeping MVP honors in all four events, Baylor's equestrian team, hosting its first home show of 2008, dropped a 12-8 decision to the visiting Texas A&M Aggies on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The Lady Bears saw their season record fall to 4-7 while the Aggies are now. 7-2.
For the second time this season, junior Nicole Brown (Zionsville, Ind.) won MVP honors in both events of Hunter Seat competition, scoring a 78.5 in Equitation on the Flat and an 81 in Equitation Over Fences. Sophomore Madelyn Mooney (Riverside, Calif.) took top honors in Reining with a score of 73.5 and Nicole McCoy (Lafayette, Colo.), a junior, was the MVP in Horsemanship with 74.5 points.
Baylor earned three points to the Western events with Mooney scoring in Reining and senior Ashleigh Carlson (Ladysmith, Wis.) and McCoy each tallying a point in Horsemanship. Baylor outscored the Aggies 4-1 in Equitation on the Flat with wins by junior Shelby White (Waco, Texas), sophomore Mary Smitson (Zionsville, Ind.), sophomore Heather Healy (Pasadena, Calif.) and Brown.
Going into the final event of the day, Equitation Over Fences, Texas A&M held a slim 8-7 advantage. However, the Aggies won four of the five rides to seal the victory.
"I was really pleased with our Flat riders today, they were really challenged and they rode well and looked good. Nicole Brown was brilliant again, this is the second time she's swept MVP honors. Our Fences riders let down a little today and were not as focused as they needed to be," said head coach Ellen White. "On the bright side, all of our riders, in both Hunter Seat and Western, are getting better and they certainly are competitive. They just need to focus and polish and take it to the end."
Baylor will now hit the road for two matches as they compete at Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 16 and at Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 17. Baylor's next home matches will feature competitions with Kansas State and Fresno State on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23, respectively. The Kansas State competition is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. while the Fresno State show will start at 10:00 a.m.
