WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team was one of 41 teams named as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) All-Academic Team it was announced recently. In addition, two players, Matt Brown and Dominik Mueller, earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status.
Brown, a junior, and Mueller, a sophomore, join former Bear Michal Kokta as ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees. Kokta earned the honor in 2006.
The team award is open to any program whose student-athletes combine for at least a 3.20 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. All student-athletes who have competed in at least one match whether in the fall or spring are included in the calculation.
For individuals to earn Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for the current academic year and must have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
"We had a excellent year on the tennis court, but I am just as proud of what we did in the classroom. The players are outstanding representatives of our university athletically and academically," said Baylor head coach Matt Knoll.
The Bears completed the 2007-08 season with a 25-9 record and were ranked No. 8 in the final ITA poll. Baylor saw its season come to and end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships when top-ranked Virginia posted a 4-2 victory.
