WACO, Texas - On Saturday, Sept. 20 beginning at 10 a.m., at the Baylor Tennis Center on campus, Baylor's men's tennis team will host its first annual Alumni Match. Several former Baylor stars will return to take on the current Bear squad in a collegiate dual match format.
"Our first annual Alumni Match should be a blast. It would take some time to count all the Big 12 Championship rings this group earned during their time at Baylor. Additionally, we'll have members of our 2004 NCAA national championship team and several All-Americans returning to our courts. This is a special chance for people to catch a glimpse of these Baylor greats," said Knoll.
Expecting to challenge the current team members are:
- Benedikt Dorsch - three-time All-American (2003, `04, `05), former NCAA singles champion and currently ranked No. 175 in the world, member of 2004 NCAA championship team
- Lars Poerschke - three-time All-American (2006, `07, `08)
- Reiner Neurohr - All-American (2003), member of 2004 NCAA championship team
- Matija Zgaga - All-American (2005), member of 2004 NCAA championship team
- Johann Jooste -Two-time All-American (1999, 2000)
- Barry McLaren, Jason Gould, Jon Recekwey, members of 2004 NCAA championship team
- Johannes Michalsky - three-time Big 12 champion (singles, two doubles)
- Jorge Aldrete - Big 12 singles champion
- Csongor Bizba
- Brandon Birmingham
- Gwen Corches
- Vladimir Portnov
The match will be a dual match format with three doubles matches followed by six singles matches. Doubles will be an eight game pro set while singles will be two sets and if necessary, a tiebreaker for the third set.
Returnees Denes Lukacs, Dominik Mueller, Attila Bucko and Jordan Rux will lead the Bears and be joined by newcomers Julian Bley and Marc Bruche, both freshmen.
