LUBBOCK, Texas - Thaddeus Gordon and Tiffany Townsend set school records and the Baylor track and field teams combined for 10 event victories on the second day of competition at the Wes Kittley Invitational at the Athletic Training Center.
"Today was a great day for an opening weekend," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We got some races under our belts and we kept everyone healthy which is always a plus."
Gordon recorded a mark of 15.13 meters (49-07 ¾) on his fifth jump to break the Baylor school record. The previous record of 48-03 was set by Charles Powell in Norman, Okla. in 1984.
Townsend sprinted to a time of 23.48 to win the women's 200 meters in a new school-record time. The old record of 23.51 was set by Kandace Tucker in Lincoln, Neb. at the 2006 Big 12 Indoor Championships.
"It is pretty amazing that we were able to set two new school records today," said Harbour. "In an opening meet, you really want to stay healthy and run solid races. To get two school records this early in the season is pretty special."
Diamond Richardson won the women's 400 meters with a time of 54.83 in her first collegiate race. Katrina Taylor finished second in 55.63. Jodi Hulett, a transfer from UT Arlington running her first indoor race for Baylor, won the women's mile with a personal-best time of 5:06.81.
The Lady Bears also won the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.10, just missing an NCAA provisional mark. Taylor led off the race with a 55.0-seconds split to reach the first exchange with a 10-meter lead. Egle Uljas split 56.5 seconds on the next leg, making a strong kick at the finish to hold the lead for Baylor.
Townsend split 55.1 seconds on the third leg, and passed to Richardson on the anchor leg. The freshman split 54.0 to lead Baylor to the win.
Whitney Prevost earned wins in the 55 meters and 200 meters. He tallied an NCAA provisional time of 21.20 in the 200 meters, while clocking 6.24 in the 55 meters, just missing a provisional mark following the .02-second altitude adjustment.
The men's 4x400-meter relay took first place to extend its winning streak to 30 straight races. The Bears have not lost a race to a collegiate team since the event finals at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Marcus Boyd opened the race with a 47.3-second split to give Baylor the early lead on the first leg. J.T. Scheuerman ran the second leg with a 47.8-second split, pulling away in the final 50 meters. James Gilreath split 48.5 seconds on the third leg and passed to Quentin Iglehart-Summers. The senior All-American split 46.9 seconds, holding off a strong charge from Abilene Christian as the Bears finished in 3:11.06.
Baylor returns to action next weekend as the Bears travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Razorback Invitational.
