WACO, Texas - The 10th-ranked Baylor Bears blanked the No. 67 Utah Utes 7-0 on the first day of ITA Qualifying at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor will now move on to play No. 57 Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

"It was a good step for us," head coach Matt Knoll said. "I think we certainly had some courts where you had to be really pleased with what we saw. I think across the board we didn't enjoy competing as much as we should have."

Baylor won the doubles point to build an early lead over Utah. Dominik Mueller and Maros Horny opened with a dominating win over Benito Suriano and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti, 8-0, at the No. 3 spot. Moments later Attila Bucko and Julian Bley clinched the doubles point when they beat the tandem of Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin, 8-3. The duo of Denes Lukacs and Jordan Rux were leading Phillip Eilers and John Taylor 5-3 when Bucko and Bley ended their match.

In singles play the Bears quickly jumped on Utah, and didn't let off up until they had won ever match in straight sets. Junior Dominik Mueller, ranked No. 7,1 closed out his match first defeating John Taylor, 6-1, 6-0, No. 13 Jordan Rux followed by closing out Wes Hancock 6-1, 6-3, and freshman Julian Bley defeated Benito Suriano 6-3, 6-0 to give the Bears the match. Denes Lukacs, ranked No. 21, won his first match of the spring season defeating Phillip Eilers 6-1, 7-5, then Maros Horny took down Jason Smits to earn his first win as a Bear, 6-3, 6-4. Finally to close out the night No. 40 Attila Bucko bested Othman Zerouali-Ouarit 6-2, 7-6(6).

The Bears are now 2-1 on the season and will play Georgia Tech tomorrow for a chance to move on to National Team Indoors competition on Feb. 13 in Chicago.

"We know that we are going to have a big challenge in Georgia Tech, they are a very talented team," Knoll said. "We are going to have to play better tennis, but that is what it is all about."

Earlier in the day Georgia Tech defeated San Diego State 4-1. San Diego State will now play Utah on Sunday at 10 a.m.
