WACO - Freshman Lisa Sliwinski buried a free kick from 20 yards out with just over three minutes left in the second overtime to give Baylor (7-4-4, 3-3-2) a 2-1 victory over Kansas (10-6-1, 2-5-0) on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. The victory was the first over the Jayhawks since a 2-1 home win on Oct.4, 2002.
"This was an evenly matched game," head coach Marci Jobson said. "I am so proud of our kids because they battled every second of the match. Lisa (Sliwinski) has a ton of confidence and it showed in that free kick."
The Bears got on the board first, as Kansas netted an own goal in the 19th minute. Freshman Dana Larsen sent a left-footed cross into the box, where it hit the head of KU defender Geneva Magness, off the post and into the net for a 1-0 Baylor lead.
Baylor held on to the lead the rest of the half, holding a 7-5 shot advantage going into the break.
The Jayhawks evened the score in the 53rd minute when Lauren Jackson sent a cross to Emily Cressy, who sent a shot that squirted through the legs of keeper Gianna Quintana and in for a 1-1 tie.
Quintana came up big the rest of the way, making four of her six saves in the second half to preserve the tie at the end of regulation.
The Bears nearly ended the game in the first overtime, when a Betsy Kyle corner kick found Lindsey Johnson's feet, but her shot went just wide of the goal.
The game-winner came in the 107th minute, after Kansas was called for a fouled just outside the penalty box. Sliwinski stood over the ball and delivered it to the far post, where it hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced in for her third goal of the season and second game-winner.
The win improves the Bears to 2-0-4 in overtime games this season. Baylor was called for 20 fouls on the game to Kansas' six, but outshot the Jayhawks 16-15.
Baylor will play its final home game of the season on Friday, Oct. 23 with a 5:00 p.m. non-conference game against Houston Baptist. It will be Family Fun Night and you can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for just $20.
