NEW YORK, N.Y. - DeAna Carson set a new school record in the long jump and recorded Baylor's first NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the process on the first day of competition at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday at The Armory Track and Field Center.
Carson's third jump of the preliminaries of 6.35m (20-10) broke the old school record of 20-07 set by April Holliness in 2002. Carson equals the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6.35m and is guaranteed a spot in the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Trey Harts set a new personal best in the 60 meters, clocking 6.66 in the championship finals to finish fourth overall. The time ranks as the third-fastest in Baylor history.
Tiffany Townsend ran 7.32 in the preliminary rounds of the women's 60 meters, equaling her personal-best time from the Razorback Invitational. The time is one-hundredth of a second off the school record. Townsend clocked 7.35 to place third in the event finals.
Marcus Boyd and Quentin Iglehart-Summers both qualified for Saturday's event finals in the men's 400 meters. Boyd clocked the second-fastest time of the preliminaries in 47.27, while Iglehart-Summers finished fourth in the preliminaries in 47.58.
The women's distance medley relay provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 11:09.11, just 11 one-hundredths from an automatic qualifying mark. Erin Bedell split four minutes, 33 seconds on the 1,600-meter anchor leg for the Lady Bears.
The men's distance medley relay finished sixth overall with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:47.20. The time also ranks as the third-fastest in Baylor history. Chris Gowell had a four minutes, three seconds split on the anchor leg for Baylor.
