Final Stats

HOUSTON - Senior Anna Breyfogle set a school record with 12 blocks in a three-set match and recorded 12 kills to lead Baylor to a sweep (25-19, 25-13, 25-18) over Houston at the Flo Hyman Invitational in Houston, Texas.

The win was the second of the day for the Bears, as they swept Southeastern Louisiana in their first match of the day. The Bears shook the rust off against SLU, and after a quick lapse at the beginning against Houston, took over for the sweep.

"Everything really clicked tonight," Breyfogle said. "Once we got under control, we got more confidence and things just started flowing."

Breyfogle seemingly got her hands on nearly every ball attacked by the Cougars on her way to the 12 blocks and the new school record. Her offense was equally as effective swinging at a .478 clip with 12 kills and just one error on 23 attacks. Sanders was second on the team in kills with nine in just two sets. Briana Tolbert saw her first action of the day in her native Houston and responded with six kills on 13 swings.

"Before the match I played closer attention to the way their hitters were approaching the net and which way they like to swing," Breyfogle said. "It really helped. I was able to recognize which way they wanted to go. We really communicated well on the front row. The wing blockers set up the block in great spots and we were able to close it."

On defense for the Bears, Allison King added her second double-digit dig match of the season with 14, putting her per set average just under 5.00. Sanders and Jordan Rice each posted seven digs.

In the first set, after Tolbert's kill got the Bears on the board, Houston reeled off eight straight points on the strength of Ashley Applequist's serve. Applequist ended up with four aces in a row, but after a Baylor timeout, the Bears scored 24 of the next 35 points to close out the set. Breyfogle piled up seven blocks in the first set, turning defense into offense.

The second set was a continuation of the first, with the Bears controlling the bulk of the offense. Sanders and Ashlie Christenson got in the mix with a couple kills apiece, while Houston had trouble scoring off the attack. For the second-straight set, the Cougars hit a negative percentage, totaling -.044 through two sets.

In the third set, an early Baylor run led by three kills from Breyfogle and two kills from Qian Zhang put the Bears up by double digits. Tolbert got in the action again with match's final kill.

The Bears (2-0) will be back in action tomorrow evening with a 5:30 p.m. start time against the University of New Orleans (1-0).
