A goal by Texas A&M's Whitney Hooper in the 59th minute led the No. 10 Aggies to a 1-0 win over Baylor Friday night before 804 fans at Betty Lou Mays Field. The loss drops Baylor to 4-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in Big 12 play, while Texas A&M moves to 6-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference.
"I am so proud of the way we competed and played tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We went up against a great team, held our own and had some chances to win."
Baylor got off the first shot of the game, as Dana Larsen fired on goalkeeper Kristin Arnold, only to see Arnold come up with the save.
Senior goalie Gianna Quintana came up big for the Bears in the first half with three saves, including a diving block that saved a goal in the 33rd minute.
A&M outshot the Bears 7-3 in the opening stanza, but the game was tied at zero at the half.
The Aggies applied pressure and finally broke through in the 59th minute as a shot by Mary Grace Schmidt was blocked by a Baylor defender and fell to Hooper who put in the back of the net from 10 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
Baylor had a great chance in the 85th minute, as Bethany Johnston broke free and was pulled down from behind near the inside of the penalty box where a free kick was awarded. Chelsea Geller drove a ball low into the wall and it fell to Larsen whose shot was saved by Kelly Dyer.
Larsen led the way with two shots, both on goal, while Lotto Smith had the Bears' other two chances. The Aggies outshot Baylor 12-4, but only by a 5-2 margin in shots on goal.
The Bears will look to bounce back with a home game against Texas (4-5, 1-0-0) on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. Sunday will be Kids Free Sunday, with children 12 and under receiving free admission and it is also H.O.T./Youth Soccer Night, as players and coaches in uniform will receive free admission.
