WACO, Texas - Allison King recorded a season-high 22 digs, and four Bears at least six kills, on the way to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-28, 25-16) sweep of UTSA in the Holiday Inn & Suites Baylor Classic inside the Ferrell Center.
UTSA held the lead on only four occasions in the match, as Baylor controlled play with its defense. The Bears racked up 60 digs, including 22 from King and nine apiece by Caitlyn Trice and Taylor Barnes. At the net, Ashlie Christenson, Torri Campbell, and Elizabeth Graham each had three block assists.
On offense Baylor compiled a .261 hitting percentage (44-13-119), led by 11 kills from Katie Sanders and 10 from Ashlie Christenson. Taylor Barnes and Brittany Ridenour split time at the setter position with Barnes totaling 20 set assists, and Ridenour totaling 16.
Baylor fell behind 3-1 early in the first set, but back-to-back kills by Graham in between two kills from Sanders put the Bears in front, 7-4. Later in the set, the offense went to Christenson and Ashley Byrd, with the Bears pushing the lead to 17-10. Up 23-17, Sanders put away two more kills around a UTSA kills to give the Bears a 25-18 win.
In the second set, Baylor spotted UTSA a 6-2 lead before getting the offense on track with three kills from Sanders and a Jordan Rice service ace for a 8-7 lead. The teams traded points until Baylor seized control of the set with a 3-0 run on back-to-back kills from Byrd and another service ace, this time from Trice. Christenson put the Bears up 23-17, and UTSA gave the Bears a second-set win with two errors.
The third set was all Bears, with Ridenour, who had entered for Barnes in the middle of the second set, leading the offense. Baylor knocked the wind out of the UTSA sails, taking points on long rallies by keeping the ball alive on defense. Sanders had three more kills in the middle of the set to push the lead to 15-9, and Byrd had two more kills to make it 23-15 before Graham finished off the match with a kill.
The Bears (6-0) will be back in action this evening in the Holiday Inn & Suites Baylor Classic title game against Purdue. The Boilermakers won both of their Baylor Classic matches also, and will face Baylor at 7:30 p.m. at the Ferrell Center tonight.
