WACO, Texas - J'mison Morgan had 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and teamed with Quincy Acy and Fred Ellis on several key plays down the stretch as No. 16 Baylor came from behind to beat Midwestern State, 68-59, Thursday night in its exhibition opener.

Morgan, Acy and Ellis combined to score 14 of the Bears' final 17 points, taking control after a see-saw affair that produced 10 ties and 11 lead changes.

"We will have a lot of teaching points and a lot of areas to work on," said head coach Scott Drew. "I know the good thing is we'll get better as the season goes on. There were some good things. Our defensive field goal percentage was good. Other than that everything else needs work."

Ellis, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds, scored on a feed from Acy with 8:17 left to give Baylor the lead for good, 53-52, then added two more buckets and a key offensive rebound on a missed free throw that Morgan turned into a layup. Acy, who had 12 points, added a bucket and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minutes.

Point guard A.J. Walton led Baylor with 14 points, all of them in the first half before fouling out with 1:27 remaining. He was one of six players disqualified from the game, which produced 58 fouls and 67 free throws, 44 of them by the Bears. Star recruit Perry Jones also fouled out for the Bears after scoring six points in 24 minutes.

David Terrell and Thomas Colbert led Midwestern State with 10 points each.

After being outrebounded by the shorter Mustangs in the first half, the Bears dominated the boards down the stretch to finish with a 34-26 advantage. Baylor also committed 23 turnovers which Midwestern State turned into 19 points.

"You've got a sophomore point guard (A.J. Walton) and a freshman point guard (Stargell Love) backing him up, and Fred Ellis starting at the 2 when he has been starting at the four most of his career," Drew said. "I think we'll definitely get better in that department. We also got a little spoiled with the veteran point guard play we've had the last four years."

Coming off a 28-8 season which ended with a loss to eventual national champion Duke in the Elite 8, Baylor played without leading scorer LaceDarius Dunn.

Midwestern State, coached by former Baylor walk-on Grant McCasland, is also coming off an NCAA quarterfinals appearance. The Tigers reached the Elite 8 in Division II last year to finish 31-3.
