WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team earned its 10th invitation to NCAA postseason competition as the Lady Bears were selected Monday to compete at the 2010 NCAA Central Regional. The Lady Bears have made the NCAA Regionals in 10 of the last 11 seasons under 16th-year head coach Sylvia Ferdon.
Baylor is one of 24 teams tabbed for the NCAA Central Regional, which will be held May 6-8 at the par-72, 6,416-yard Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., and hosted by Indiana University.
"We're relieved, but very excited to be selected to play in the Central Regional," Ferdon said. "It's time to rebound from the Big 12 Championship and get ready to compete for a spot in the NCAA Championships."
Prior to Monday's announcement, the Lady Bears finished ninth this past weekend at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship in Norman, Okla. Senior Hannah Burke notched her school-record 13th career top-five finish, concluding play in second place. As a freshman, Burke finished 46th at the NCAA West Regional in 2007 and later placed 18th at the 2009 NCAA West Regional.
Three 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 6-8. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply. A total of 369 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals - eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
The 29th annual NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., and will be hosted by UNC Wilmington.
