WACO, Texas - Sophomore Lisa Sliwinski scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute to lead Baylor (5-1-0) to a 1-0 win over Houston (3-1-1) Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the victory, the Bears are off to their best start since posting a 5-1 record in 2002.
The win moves the Bears to 5-0 at home and marked their fifth shutout of the season.
"This was a really hard fought victory for us," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Houston is a very physical team and I was proud of the way we battled throughout the game. Lisa and Hanna Gilmore are really feeding off each other right now and it's great to see."
Sliwinski added her fifth goal of the season, and joins Gilmore atop the conference, while Gilmore's assist tied her and Sliwinski for the Big 12 lead in points with 12.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Seelhorst continued her solid play, making three saves and posting her third solo shutout of the season.
For the fifth time this season, Baylor dominated the shot totals as the Bears outshot the Cougars, 15-6.
The first half found the two teams in a battle for possession with Baylor holding to Houston to no shots while taking four of its own. BU's best chance came in the fifth minute when a free kick from Dana Larsen curled around the wall and hit the crossbar before being cleared by the Cougars' defense.
Tied at zero at the half, the Bears nearly took a one-goal lead in the 47th minute when a header by Lindsey Johnson was saved by UH goalie, Camille Koski.
Baylor would find the back of the net soon enough, as Gilmore ran down a ball in the Houston end and tiptoed along the end line until she found Sliwinski who buried it into the far post for a 1-0 lead.
Houston had its best chance to score in the 63rd minute, as a foul was committed just two yards outside the box, allowing the Cougars a free kick. Nichole Duarte blasted a low shot that saw Seelhorst spring to her right for the save and keep the Bears on top.
In what proved to be a physical contest, 33 fouls were committed with Baylor being whistled for 17 and Houston 16. In addition, four yellow cards were issued with three going to Houston.
Baylor has now scored 20 goals in just six games, after scoring 27 in 19 games in 2009.
The Bears will be back at home on Friday, Sept. 10 as they host New Mexico (4-0-2) at 7:00 p.m. at Betty Lou Mays Field.
