Price's Give 'Em Five Results
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -Behind the second-round low score of 286, the 21st-ranked Baylor women's golf team vaulted into first place Tuesday at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate.
Both Baylor and Idaho shot 286 in the second round, but the Lady Bears still hold a two-stroke advantage over the second-place Vandals. Colorado State moved up two spots to third place at 5-over 581, while North Texas remained in fourth at 11-over 587. First-round leader Long Beach State dropped to fifth place.
"I'm really proud of the way we fought back in the second round," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "We had about as bad a start as we could have had. At one point, we were 8-over through five holes.
"To come back from that to shoot the low round is phenomenal," Goble said. "I'm ecstatic with the way we came back. We talked about fighting for every shot and every hole. We did just that Tuesday."
Senior Jaclyn Jansen is in a three-way tie for second place at 3-under 141, after carding her second consecutive sub-par round. Jansen is one stroke behind the leader, Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro, who is 4-under through 36 holes. Fellow senior Chelsey Cothran, who owned a share of the individual lead after 18 holes, shot a second-round 74 and is in a sixth-place tie at 1-under 143.
Reigning Big 12 Golfer of the Month Hayley Davis entered the second round tied for 22nd. Davis rebounded from her first-round 75, shooting a career-low-tying 69. At even-par 144, Davis is in eighth place, four strokes behind the leader.
"I think Tuesday's performance will give us some momentum heading into the final round," Goble said.
Valerie Sternebeck shot an even-par 72 to move up to 25th place at 5-over 149. Stani Schiavone is tied for 45th overall at 10-over 154.
The final round of the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate will tee off Wednesday at 9 a.m. CDT. There is no live scoring for the event.
