AMES, Iowa - Baylor's volleyball team jumped out to a lead in the first set, but 15th-ranked Iowa State erased the deficit and didn't look back on the way to a sweep (19-25, 14-25, 18-25) over the Bears on Saturday.
Baylor scored the first four points of the match, and held a lead as big as five at 12-7 in the first, but Iowa State erased the BU advantage and never trailed again. For the match, Baylor hit just .023 offensively with 29 errors, while Iowa State hit .252 with only nine errors.
"Iowa State played very well, and we had too many players off to mount a big run," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We got good play from Allison King in the back row, but we just didn't play well offensively."
Iowa State made a big difference in the match at the net on defense, as the Cyclones racked up 13.0 total blocks. Middle blocker Tenisha Matlock led the team with eight block assists, while outside hitter Carly Jenson had five blocks assists and one solo block.
Baylor's lone bright spot for the night was senior libero Allison King in the back row. King had a match-high 22 digs, marking the 20th consecutive match with double-digit digs. On offense, Briana Tolbert had a team-high eight kills, while Alyssa Dibbern added six and Kate Harris had 28 assists
Three ISU errors and a kill by Tolbert led Baylor to a 4-0 lead to start the first set. After the Cyclones closed it to 7-5, Torri Campbell recorded back-to-back kills as part of a 5-2 run that made it 12-7. From there, Iowa State scored seven in a row to take a 14-12 lead. Baylor held tough for a moment, reclaiming the lead at 16-15 with a Tolbert kill, but the Cyclones scored 10 of the next 13 points to win the set 25-19.
In the second and third sets, Iowa State built a lead of 8-3 in each. Baylor only got as close as four at 10-6 in the second set, but 10 attack errors and a -.068 hitting percentage in the set led to a 25-14 ISU win. In the third, Baylor scored three straight on kills by Dibbern and Tolbert late in the set, but the lead was too large and Iowa State won 25-18.
Baylor will be back on the floor at home in its next match, hosting No. 8 Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The match will be televised live on the Longhorn Network, and also streamed live on www.BaylorBears.com.
