Baylor Athletics Experience

SAN MARCOS, Texas- Junior Torri Campbell tied a career high with 18 kills and senior Allison King racked up a career-high 34 digs to lead Baylor to a five-set comeback win (22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8) over Texas State on Tuesday in San Marcos, Texas.

After falling down 2-1 with losses in the first and third sets, Baylor (17-9) erased an early five-point deficit in the fourth set to start on the comeback trail. The Bears won the fourth and then dominated the fifth set, 15-8, to spoil the Bobcats' (20-7) upset bid. The win ensures Baylor of a winning record, marking a program-best fourth consecutive season over .500.

"We didn't play our best match, but we found a way to win and that's important," head coach Jim Barnes said. "This was a big match for Texas State, and they play tremendous at home, but we just got back to playing aggressively and were able to get the match back. I think our seniors really wanted to make a statement, and they know how important every win is."

Offensively, Campbell really got rolling in the second set, notching eight of her 18 kills. For the match, Campbell hit a team-best .410, and was one of four players with at least 10 kills. Sophomore Zoe Adom added 14, senior Briana Tolbert had 13 and freshman Adri Nora racked up 10 kills.

"We have to credit Torri (Campbell) and Bri (Tolbert) for stepping up and leading the charge offensively," Barnes said. "Allison (King) had a great night digging and passing, and as a competitor, she really brought an edge to her game that helped us pick it up. Zoe played an efficient game, and that's what we were looking from her."

Junior setter Kate Harris had a solid match on both sides of the ball, tallying her third straight and eighth double-double with 55 assists and 13 digs. King was on-point all night long with defensive position, leading to her career night. Her 34 digs were included nine digs in each of the middle three sets. Campbell added seven block assists to lead the defense at the net.

For Texas State, outside hitter Melissa Toth led the team with 18 kills as one of four players with at least 10 in the match.

In the first set, the Bobcats pushed the lead to 10-6, but Baylor used a 5-1 run with back-to-back kills from Adom to tie it at 11-11. The set continued to be back-and-forth as BU took a 19-17 lead with a solo block from Tolbert, but Texas State quickly jumped back in the lead 20-19. Qian Zhang and Tolbert got kills for another Baylor lead at 21-20, but that was short-lived and Texas State scored five of the next six to win the set 25-22.

Baylor dominated the second set, breaking it open with an 8-0 run that featured three kills by Campbell for a 14-7 lead. Campbell's offense sparked another big run, 9-1, with three more kills for a 23-10 lead. The Bobcats scored five in a row to close within 23-15, but Nora finished it off with a kill at 25-16.

The third set mirrored the first with Texas State controlling play in the beginning. A Tolbert kills and Bobcat error got Baylor within two at 8-6, but Texas State scored nine of the next 12 to break it open. Baylor had a 6-1 run late with two kills by Campbell and one by Adom to get within 24-21, only to fall short when Amari Deardorff closed it out for the Bobcats with a kill, 25-21.

In the fourth set, Baylor got off to a horrendous start, trailing 7-2, but a 7-1 run highlighted by two Tolbert kills gained the momentum back. Zhang and Nora then capped a 4-1 span with kills for a 16-13 lead. The Bears held the lead to at least two, getting a finishing kill from Zhang for a 25-22 set win.

The fifth set was Baylor's from the beginning. The Bears grabbed a 7-2 lead, getting two kills from Adom, and pushed it to 12-4. After three in a row by Texas State, Nora notched a kill and Zhang followed a Bobcat error for her second-consecutive match-finishing kill at 15-8.

Baylor will be back on the court at Missouri this weekend, taking on the Tigers on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hearnes Center in Columbia, Missouri. The Big 12 battle features two teams dead-locked in sixth place in the league with a 4-6 record. Baylor defeated Missouri 3-2 earlier this season.
