WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team (15-3-3) notched its first NCAA win in program history, dominating Texas State (14-6-1) 3-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Friday night in Waco. The crowd of 951 was the second largest at Betty Lou Mays Field this season.
With 15 wins on the year, the Bears tie the 1998 Big 12 Champion team for the second-most victories in a season, sitting two away from the school record of 17 set in 1996.
"Our girls played great soccer tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We really controlled the game and played with an edge we have been missing lately."
The Bears picked up goals from their top three scorers, as Lisa Sliwinski and Dana Larsen each recorded a goal and assist, while Hanna Gilmore added a goal and Vic Hoffman dished out an assist on the night.
"This team is as fun to coach as any I have ever had," Jobson said. "They really love to play together and be around one another, and it shows on the field."
BU outshot the Bobcats 15-3, including 9-0 in shots on goal. Baylor earned its 11th clean sheet of the year, while goalkeeper Courtney Seelhorst picked up her 10th solo shutout.
Baylor broke the scoreless tie with the game's first goal in the 24th minute, as Hoffman slipped the ball through the Texas State backline and found Sliwinski for a one-on-one that she slotted away to the far post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the ninth for the junior forward and fourth in the last three games.
The Bears held a 7-0 shot advantage and 1-0 lead at the break.
Baylor doubled its lead in the 58th minute after a left-footed cross from Larsen found a sliding Gilmore on the back post from six yards out for the 2-0 lead. It marked the second goal in as many games for Gilmore, who has six on the year.
With just under three minutes remaining, the Bears added a final goal for good measure after a header was flicked-on by Sliwinski the found Larsen's feet for a near post finish. Her 11th goal of the year, she tied Molly Cameron (2000) for the fifth-most in a season by a BU player.
"We will just keep taking it one game at a time and one step at a time," Jobson said. "We have an outstanding opponent up next, but every team left in the tournament is great so we need to be at our best."
Baylor will now face No. 19 North Carolina (12-5-1) on Friday, Nov. 18 in Gainesville, Fla. Times for the four-team regional will be announced late Saturday evening.
