AUSTIN, Texas- Baylor's volleyball team put itself in position to win the first set, but No. 9 Texas found a way back and then went on to sweep the Bears (23-25, 19-25, 16-25) on Wednesday night at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin, Texas.
Baylor held the potent Longhorn attack to just a .227 hitting percentage in the first set and took a 23-21 lead with a 3-0, but Texas came roaring back with four in a row to take control. The Longhorns went on to hit .625 in the second set and .464 in the third set with just one total error after the first frame on the way to a sweep. Texas finished the match at .396 as a team.
Baylor ended the day with a .221 hitting percentage, but got good production from the middle of the attack with senior Briana Tolbert and junior Torri Campbell each hitting over .350. Each racked up nine kills in the match with Campbell hitting .444 and Tolbert hitting .353. Junior setter Kate Harris ended with a match-high 28 assists for the Bears.
On the defensive side, senior libero Allison King entered the day just nine digs shy of second place all-time in the Big 12 in career digs with 2,032. She came through with 18 digs, marking the 28th consecutive match with at least 10 and improving her all-time BU-leading total to 2,041.
The first set was tight the whole, featuring 16 ties and eight lead changes as each team was able to limit each other's runs. Texas got out to leads up 4-1 and 7-4, but Baylor put on a 4-0 run to take the lead back for the first time with a kill by Campbell. The Bears pushed the lead to 12-10 with an ace by Campbell, but Texas eventually worked its way back in front at 21-20 to force a BU timeout. Out of the break, the Bears sandwiched two Tolbert kills around a block by Tolbert and Dibbern for a 23-21 lead. Texas took a timeout and then came back out to get two Haley Eckerman kills and force two BU errors for the 25-23 win.
Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a kill by Tolbert, but wouldn't lead again the rest of the set. Texas put on a 7-1 run to build a 9-4 lead. Baylor got as close as three at 12-9 on a kill by Adri Nora, but again the Longhorns stretched the lead with a run. Despite two more kills by Tolbert, Texas went on to commit zero errors in the set on the way to a 25-19 win.
In the third set, Baylor was determined early on, erasing a 3-1 lead with back-to-back-to-back kills by Tolbert for a 5-3 lead. Two more kills by Campbell and a kill by Adom kept the BU lead at 8-6, but Texas made its move with a 10-2 run for a 16-8 lead. The Horns went on to win 25-16 and take the match.
