GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Baylor soccer team (15-4-3) surrendered four goals in the first half in a 5-0 loss to No. 18 North Carolina (13-5-1) in the NCAA Championship second round at Elvis G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

With 15 wins on the year, the Bears tied the 1998 Big 12 Champion team for the second-most victories in a season and was the first team to advance past the first round of the NCAA Championship in program history.

"I am so proud of what this team accomplished this season," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We didn't play well in the first half and North Carolina is a great team that made us pay for every mistake we made."

The five goals allowed were the most since Oct. 16, 2009 in a 5-0 loss to Missouri.

North Carolina struck first in the 14th minute, after a clearance bounced off a Baylor defender and to the feet of a UNC player who dished it to Kelly McFarlane for the left-footed shot and near post goal.

The Tar Heels doubled their lead in the 24th minute after a blocked UNC shot came to the foot of Hanna Gilmore, whose clearance hit off her foot and into the back of the net for a 2-0 BU deficit.

Courtney Seelhorst came up with a huge save on a long shot that was thwarted over the top of the goal on a leaping effort.

On that corner kick, the Tar Heels found the back of the net for the third time off a pass that found Megan Brigman alone on the back post for the easy cleanup and a 3-0 lead.

The Tar Heels notched a fourth goal with five minutes to go in the first half when Taylor Heatherly and Carlie Davis both missed a clearance that allowed Elizabeth Berchanel to run free and score on the far post.

The Bears trailed 4-0 at the half and were outshot 7-2.

"We had a lot of nerves to start the game and just didn't seem very settled," Jobson said. "I thought we looked much better in the second half and this team never gave up for one second."

The Tar Heels added their fifth goal on a breakaway by Emmalie Pfankuch from eight yards out in the 67th minute for a 5-0 advantage.

The Bears nearly scored in the 81st minute off a corner kick from Hannah Dismuke that found Alexa Wilde's head, but was cleared off the line by North Carolina.

Seelhorst made seven saves on the night, the most since making nine at Nebraska on Aug. 21. Bethany Johnston and Hannah Dismuke led the team with two shots each.
