SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 3 Baylor soccer team (14-3-3) tied No. 6 Missouri (12-7-1) 2-2, but the Tigers advanced 4-3 in penalty kicks at the Big 12 Championship Wednesday afternoon at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
"Once you get to penalty kicks, anything can happen," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Our girls fought hard the whole game, but we gave them a couple goals and they capitalized when it counted."
The Bears got goals from Lisa Sliwinski and Hanna Gilmore, who scored their eighth and fifth, respectively, while Taylor Heatherly and Kat Ludlow picked up assists.
Baylor outshot Missouri 20-13 on the day.
Missouri struck first when Hannah Dismuke tried to clear a ball inside the eight-yard box and it ricocheted into the net for an own goal and an early MU lead.
Baylor answered back in the 45th minute, as Lisa Sliwinski took a cross from Taylor Heatherly and half-volleyed it in the back of the net with 27 seconds left in the half to tie the game at one.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute off a left-footed goal by Gilmore from 10 yards out who received a long throw-in from Kat Ludlow.
In the 66th minute, the Tigers drew a foul in the box and Dominique Richardson sent the penalty kick to the right side of the goal to even the game at two.
After neither team could score in overtime, the game went to penalty kicks.
Gilmore missed the first PK wide right and Missouri scored its attempt to go ahead 1-0. Michelle Hagen, Justine Hovden and Lisa Sliwinski each registered a score to even it at 3-3 and Courtney Seelhorst made a save to keep it tied after four rounds. Bethany Johnston then had her attempt blocked by MU's Mckenzie Sauerwein, and Sauerwein took the final kick and scored for the 4-3 advancement.
Baylor, ranked No. 14 in the latest RPI, will await its fate with the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 3:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
