Track Takes Seven Titles at ASU Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. - After each set new school records during the indoor season, sophomore Skylar White and freshman Tiffani McReynolds did the same outdoors, helping Baylor win seven events on Saturday at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.White broke her own school record in the shot put with a toss of 56 feet, 3.75 inches on her way to an event win, while McReynolds raced past the 100-meter hurdle field in her first-career outdoor meet with a time of 13.17. With White breaking a record that was less than one year old, McReynolds managed to shatter a 15-year-old Baylor record of 13.47 set by Kim Ford in 1996. White also added a third-place finish in the discus with the second-best toss of her career at 172-5.
"It was an outstanding day that had seven wins and two more school records," head coach Todd Harbour said. "I am proud of our team, and we came out here and had some really good performances all the way around. It was a good, solid meet."
Senior Tiffany Townsend added a win on the women's side in the 100 meters with a time of 11.44, while Marcus Boyd and Gabriel El Hanbli added victories for the men. Boyd recorded a solid season-opening time of 46.51 in the 400 meters for the win, while El Hanbli battled through the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.65 to take top honors.
Baylor's men and women each also picked up a relay victory, with the men taking the 4x100-meter title and the women winning the 4x400-meter title. The sprint crew of Marcus Boyd, Whitney Prevost, Woodrow Randall and Marcus Thompson earned the win in the 4x100 with a time of 39.79. For the women, Brittany OgunMokun, Tiffany Townsend, Brittany Bruce and Diamond Richardson combined for a season-best winning time of 3:36.83.
McReynolds added a couple second-place finishes on the day as well, finishing behind Townsend in the 100 meters with a time of 11.53, and joining Townsend, Bruce and Richardson for a runner-up finish in the 4x100-meter relay at 44.21.
Along with their performances in the relays, Richardson and OgunMokun each had good marks in their individual events. Richardson was third in the 400 meters with a time of 53.51, while OgunMokun set a new career-best and placed second in the 800 meters at 2:08.22.
In the field events for the men, senior Nick Lyons neared his school-record and career-best mark in the javelin. Lyons had four throws over 225 feet, finishing in second place with his best throw of the day at 236-0.
On the men's side on the track, Randall and James Gilreath, along with the men's 4x400-meter relay team each turned in top-five finishes. Randall put down a solid mark in the 100 meters with a time of 10.37, while Gilreath had a career-best 1:48.92 in the 800 meters to place fourth.
Gilreath also ran the third leg on Baylor's runner-up 4x400-meter relay team with Zwede Hewitt, Whitney Prevost and Marcus Boyd. The crew combined for a season-best time of 3:05.49.
Baylor's track and field team will be back on the track next Saturday, April 2, at the Bobby Lane UTA Invitational. Action will begin in the field at 9 a.m. with the women's pole vault, while events on the track will start at 1 p.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
