NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Skylar White claimed a third-place finish in the shot put and 16 runners earned a spot in the finals with their performances on Saturday at the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Norman, Okla.
On an unseasonably cool day, Baylor's track and field team battled some swirling winds, but still managed to set numerous personal bests and advance to the finals of their respective events. Along with White's third-place finish in the shot put, eight women and eight men qualified for the Sunday's finals.
"Like any Big 12 meet, you have some great performances and some near-misses, but overall we had a really good day," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a lot of people make the finals for tomorrow and we are going to be able to score some big points. Skylar had another good day in the shot put to finish third."
White took on some of the nation's best in the women's shot put and had the second-best performance of her career with her toss of 55 feet, seven inches. She was fourth after the preliminary round, but had her best throw to start the finals to jump a spot. With the finish, White earns the fifth all-Big 12 honor of her career.
In the only other final event on the day for BU, senior Joe Farley tied for seventh place in the pole vault, clearing a bar of 16-4.
On the track, Tiffani McReynolds and Tiffany Townsend each qualified in two events for the women, while Whitney Prevost equaled the feat on the men's side. McReynolds turned in the fastest time of the day in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.09, which was also the seventh-fastest time ever at the conference meet. She also qualified seventh in the 100 meters at 11.64.
Townsend blew away her heat of the 200 meters with a time of 22.95, her best of the season, to qualify second overall. She was also the second-fastest in the 100 meters with a time of 11.38 to automatically qualify.
For the men, Prevost turned in a solid day on the track, posting qualifying marks in the 100 and 200 meters. In the 100 meters, Prevost earned a spot with his time of 10.48, then inched his way into a spot in the 200-meter final with a time of 20.91.
In the 400 meters, Baylor had two qualifiers on the men's side and one more on the women's side. Marcus Boyd and Zwede Hewitt each earned automatic spots. Boyd won his heat with a time of 45.81, while Hewitt was second in his heat at 46.38. For the women, Diamond Richardson was third in her heat, but seventh overall to qualify for the final with a time of 53.20.
The 800 meters had qualifiers on both sides as well, with Lizzy Whitney and Brittany OgunMokun for the women and James Gilreath for the men. Whitney turned in a personal best by 3.5 seconds with a time of 2:07.97, while OgunMokun was solid with a time of 2:08.41. Gilreath, meanwhile, coasted to an easy win in his heat with a time of 1:50.04.
Just like the 400 and 800, Baylor qualified three more in the 400-meter hurdles with two on the men's side and one more on the women's. Sophomore Chance Casey turned in his best time of the season to qualify sixth overall with a time of 50.85, while freshman Gabriel El Hanbli qualified eighth overall at 51.38. For the women, Christina Holland ran a career-best of 57.82 to qualify with the fourth-best time of the day.
Baylor also had a few near-misses on the day, most notably in the men's and women's 200 meters. With nine runners qualifying in each running event, Baylor had the 10th-place finisher on both sides in the 200. Randall missed ninth place by .005 seconds with a time of 21.09 on the men's side, while Brittany Bruce was .20 seconds behind ninth place with a time of 23.68 on the women's side.
Baylor will be back on the track for the final day of action at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on Sunday at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman, Okla. Field events are set to begin at 1 p.m., while running events will start at 2 p.m.
