John Peers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championship with his victory in the first round of action at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.

Peers, ranked No. 19, was victorious after his opponent, Arthur Surreaux of New Mexico State, retired due to a back injury. Peers had taken the first set 6-0 when Surreaux retired.

Peers will now face 28th-ranked Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine in second round action on Thursday. Fanselow upset second-ranked and second-seeded Alex Domijan of Virginia, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

"John was raring to go and got off to a really good start. After he got his first service break, he was just rolling and got an emotional edge over Surreaux. He couldn't have gotten off to a better start," said head coach Matt Knoll.

Doubles action begins on Thursday and Baylor's fifth-ranked tandem of Peers and Maytin will meet 60th-ranked Sebastien Vidal and Jamie Whiteford on William and Mary. Peers and Maytin are 34-5 overall and 21-2 in dual-match play with all of those matches coming at the top of the Baylor doubles lineup. The tandem enters the doubles portion of the tournament riding an 11-match win streak.
