WACO, Texas - Senior Allison King racked up 24 digs to lead a Baylor team that racked up 74 total in a three-set sweep of West Virginia on Tuesday at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The match marked Baylor's (6-1) sixth straight win on the season.
"I thought we came out with good energy tonight," head coach Jim Barnessaid. "We came out focused on our goals and our milestones for the night. We had a goal of having at least 15 kills in each set tonight, and had 18, 19 and 15, so we met that."
Averaging just over 15 digs per set on the season entering the match, the Baylor back row put together an impressive display that featured an average of 24.6 digs per set. For King, the season-high of 24 digs tied her with former Baylor standout Cory Sivertson (1991-94) for the career record of 1,575. In addition, senior Qian Zhang had a solid night with 13 digs and senior Brittany Ridenouradded 10.
On offense, Ridenour tallied 41 assists to complete her third double-double in the last four matches. Her main weapons on the night were sophomore Zoe Adom, freshman Adri Nora and junior middle blocker Torri Campbell, Adom had her second straight match with double-digit kills, notching a team-high 13, while Nora had a career-high with 12 and Campbell added 11.
"We wanted to see how Adri (Nora) would come out tonight, and she came out and played really well," Barnes said. "Her and Zoe (Adom) are very powerful. A lot of [West Virginia's] blocking scheme was to with the middles, so that left our leftsides one-on-one, which gave Zoe and Adri a lot of kills."
The Bears broke open a 5-5 deadlock in the first set with a 5-0 run that featured two big kills by Nora, whose career-night featured just one error in 25 attempts to go along with her 12 kills for a team-best .440 hitting percentage. Up 13-8, Baylor pushed the lead to 10 forcing three WVU attack errors and adding kills by Campbell and Adom. Adding to her solid first set, Nora collected the set's final kill for a 25-14 set-win.
Tied at 4-4 early in the second set, Ridenour placed two perfect service aces and Campbell ripped off two kills to give BU a 9-5 and force a Mountaineer timeout. After two kills by Briana Tolbertpushed the lead to five at 14-9, WVU put together an 8-4 to pull within one at 18-17, but Adom sandwiched two kills around a second-touch kill from Ridenour to take the set 25-19.
In the third, West Virginia came out with energy, scoring six points in a row with four kills, an ace and a Baylor error for their biggest lead of the match at 11-8. The Mountaineers held the lead as late as 18-17, but BU scored eight of the next 10 with a big support from the crowd to finish the sweep. Scoring the final five points, of the match, the turning point came with a big block assist by Campbell and Alyssa Dibbernto give Baylor a 23-20 lead. Nora added a kill and WVU missed with an attack to end it 25-20.
