DALLAS, Texas - Despite 15 kills from senior Torri Campbell, Baylor (20-12) was unable to stop SMU's (11-20) .296 hitting attack, falling 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 12-25, 20-25) Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
"SMU played great," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We fought hard but our serve-receive game struggled too much today. Torri Campbell tried to lead us back, but it's a team game and our team didn't play well enough."
Campbell led the way in kills (15), hitting percentage (.565) and blocks (4). It marks the third time this season she has had double-digit kills in back-to-back games. Senior Alyssa Dibbern added 10 kills, while senior Kate Harris added her 18th double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs.
Defensively, Thea Munch-Soegaard totaled 16 digs and Hope Ogden had 13 digs.
After Baylor scored the first two points, SMU came back with five in-a-row for an early advantage. Trailing 24-18, Kayci Evans served Baylor to four-straight points, but a service error ended BU's comeback hopes, 25-22. The Mustangs had six of their 11 service aces in the opening set.
The Bears came out strong in the second, scoring the first four points and forcing an SMU timeout. The Bears extended their lead to 8-1 and maintained it the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 win. Baylor used four service aces and four kills apiece from Campbell and Adom to even the match heading to the break.
SMU answered with a strong start in the third, opening to a 7-2 advantage, extending it to 12-4 to force another BU timeout. The Mustangs continued to roll with a .382 hitting percentage compared to -.071 for the Bears, taking the third 25-12.
Baylor held an early 10-7 lead in the fourth set, but a 4-0 run put SMU back in the lead. The Bears grabbed the lead back at 13-12, but a quick 3-0 run from the Mustangs put them in the lead for good, winning 25-20.
Baylor will now await word on if it will be selected to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The selection show, which the Bears will watch privately, will take place on Sunday beginning at 3 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
