WACO, Texas - Max Muncy's fourth hit of the day was a two-run double to break a 6-6 tie, and one pitch later the game was called due to a travel curfew as Baylor completed a three-game sweep of Kansas with an 8-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
With the sweep, Baylor (18-7, 6-0 Big 12) is off to its best start in Big 12 history, and the Bears have swept back-to-back Big 12 series for the first time since April of 2005.
"For Max (Muncy) to get the base hit at the time he got it, a lot of times spots in this league are separated by half games, so this one will be interesting to look back on when the season's over and see just how big it really was," head coach Steve Smith said. "Obviously it sends us home feeling very good."
The game was only tied when Muncy came up to bat because of a clutch pitch from reliever Crayton Bare. With the score tied 6-6, the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth, Bare was called in from the bullpen to face James Stanfield. Bare (2-0) threw a 3-2 curveball for a called strike three to end the threat and pick up his second win of the season.
Baylor's game-winning rally in the eighth started when Jake Miller led off with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on Michael Howard's sacrifice bunt. Nathan Orf was then hit by a pitch, and after Kansas (10-13, 0-3 Big 12) closer Tanner Poppe (0-3) got a strikeout for the second out, Muncy drilled a two-run double down the right-field line.
Muncy finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Dan Evatt hit a two-run homer, and Cal Towey went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Logan Vick and Lawton Langford added two hits apiece and both scored one run.
The Bears built a 6-1 lead through the first three innings, but Kansas battled back with four runs in the fifth and tied the game on a Alex DeLeon solo homer in the seventh.
Baylor starter Max Garner didn't factor in the decision after allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Dillon Newman allowed one run in 3.0 innings of relief for the Bears.
Josh Ludy's RBI double in the first got the Bears on the board, and Towey added a sacrifice fly to give Baylor a 2-0 lead. Miller singled leading off the second and scored on Orf's sacrifice fly, and the Bears added three more runs in the third on Towey's RBI groundout and Evatt's two-run homer.
Kansas scored an unearned run in the third without the benefit of a hit. Michael Suiter was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Tucker Tharp reached on a fielding error. Kevin Kuntz followed with a line drive to right that fell in front of Logan Brown, but Brown was able to throw Tharp out at second base and Suiter came around to score on the throw.
Baylor's last five starting pitchers combined to build a streak of 27.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run before Kansas broke through in the fifth.
The Jayhawks sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth and scored four runs on four hits and a walk to cut the Bears' lead to 6-5. Newman came out of the bullpen with two outs in the inning and struck out Suiter to leave the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Kansas starter Wes Benjamin did not factor in the decision after allowing six runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. Robert Kahana worked 2.1 shutout innings of relief before Poppe took the loss with two runs allowed in 0.2 inning.
Baylor returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Cougar Field for a 6:30 p.m. game against Houston. Senior Joey Hainsfurther is expected to start on the mound for the Bears as they look to extend their winning streak to eight games.
