WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team swept its doubleheader on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center, downing St. Edward's 6-1 and Laredo Community College 7-0.
With the victories, the 41st-ranked Bears raised their season record to 7-5 while St. Edward's falls to 5-4 and Laredo CC is now 2-3.
"Today's wins were huge, we need to build on this momentum. Our young team needs to have some success. I thought overall we did well. Some of the guys had some tough sets, fell behind early and really fought hard and were able to come back and win the match. I thought that showed a lot of toughness," said head coach Matt Knoll.
Seniors Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro, junior Robert Verzaal and freshman Diego Galeano were all double winners in singles for the Bears. Galeano played at No. 3, Verzaal at No. 4, Bley and No. 5 and Grangeiro at No. 6.
In doubles, Roberto Maytin and Mate Zsiga and Grangeiro and Bley each won two matches, while Verzaal teamed with Robbie Korth to win vs. St. Edward's and paired with Marko Krickovic in victory over Laredo CC.
"Julian (Bley) has gotten off to a little bit of a slow start this spring but to be beating guys the way he is is great. We need his leadership, we need our seniors to be seniors and for him to go out and have the success he had today was a great sign," said Knoll.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 6, when they host 58th-ranked Maryland at 2 p.m. The Terps are coached by former Baylor assistant coach Kyle Spencer.
