Honolulu, Hawaii - No. 6 Hawaii's (5-0) Emily Hartong totaled 18 kills en route to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-19) win over Baylor (4-1) before a crowd of 6,339 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday night on day two of the Hawiian Airlines Wahine Classic.
"Hawaii's serve really had us on our heels," head coach Jim Barnes said. "I thought we did a better job of receiving and fighting in set three and early in two, but credit Hawaii because they are a great team."
Alyssa Dibbern and Laura Jones each totaled six kills, while Thea Munch-Soegaard led the defensive effort for BU with seven digs. Hawaii hit .372 on the night, while Baylor managed just a .089 hitting percentage.
Baylor jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set and held a 10-9 advantage before the Wahine went on a 10-3 run, taking the first set 25-17.
The Bears took a brief 7-6 lead in game two, but that was all the closer they would come, eventually succumbing to Hawaii's .406 hitting percentage and 17 kills and falling 25-13.
The Bears took a 5-0 run and made it a 5-1 lead early in the third. Maintaining an advantage for much of the set, Hawaii took a 17-16 lead, forcing a BU timeout, but the Bears would get no closer falling 25-19 in the third set. Baylor had a match-high 13 kills to go with a .211 hitting percentage, but the Wahine had a match-best .412 mark of their own to claim the game and match.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, taking on San Francisco at 8:00 p.m. CT.
