WACO, Texas - Following a loss in the doubles point, the 22nd-ranked Baylor men's tennis team came out hot in singles play to claim a 6-1 victory over No. 15 California on Tuesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The victory improves BU's overall record to 13-4 on the season, 10-2 at home and 4-4 vs. ranked opponents. The loss drops California to 8-5 on the season.

"I thought Cal really out-classed us in the doubles," head coach Matt Knoll said. "It was kind of a lesson that I think will help us. I told the guys in the locker room that I thought we could come out and win six singles and they did. It is certainly a huge step in the right direction. Cal is a great team and we saw this as a great opportunity to see where we stand and it is a good message."

The Bears lost the doubles for only the fourth time in 2013 as Cal's 26th-ranked pair of Campbell Johnson and Christopher Koningsfeldt raced past Mate Zsiga and Tony Lupieri, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot.

At the bottom of the doubles order, BU's Julian Lenz and Patrick Pradella bounced back with an 8-4 victory over Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton.

The Golden Bears then stopped Baylor's momentum with the 40th-ranked tandem of Mads Engsted and Ben McLachlan earning a 8-5 triumph vs. Marko Krickovic and Diego Galeano at the No. 2 position.

The tide of the match shifted quickly in singles as the Bears won all six first sets.

At the No. 6 spot, Roberto Maytin converted the opening set win into a match victory as he polished off Melton, 7-5, 6-1. The win gets the BU senior to 5-5 in dual-match play and snaps a three-match losing streak for him.

The 80th-ranked Lupieri added to Baylor's lead on court four with a 6-2, 6-0 upset of No. 46 Johnson. The sophomore is 11-3 in dual-match play and has won five straight.

To put the Bears on the brink of victory, the No. 71 Lenz dropped the 44th-ranked McLachlan, 6-3, 6-4 at the top of the lineup.

No. 33 Patrick Pradella eventually bested No. 66 Konigsfeldt in the No. 2 spot 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to secure a Baylor victory.

Attention then turned to court four where No. 99 Zsiga came back from a second-set defeat to top Bayane 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).

To end the match, Galeano was able to hold off the comeback of Engsted to claim a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win.

BU now leads the all-time series vs. Cal, 4-1.

The Bears will now host 34th-ranked Memphis on Thursday at 6 p.m., before they travel to Lubbock to start the Big 12 season against Texas Tech on Sun., April 7.
