Cross Country Leads Big 12 With 20 On Academic Team

IRVING, Texas - The Baylor cross country team led the Big 12's 10 institutions with 20 student-athletes earning a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 team, the league office announced on Tuesday.

The Bears had five men and 15 women recognized overall, while four men and all 14 women were first-team honorees. BU tallied more overall and more first-team selections than any team in the league on both the men's and women's teams.

On the men's side, senior Jonathan Tijerina was recognized for a third time on the first team, while juniors Chris McElroy and Kyle Scanlan were recognized for the second time on the first team. Sophomore Jordan West garnered his first first-team honor. Junior Matt Galvin was listed as a second-team member in 2014, after also earning second-team honors in 2012.

For the women, Sarah Guhl, Erin Hegarty, Jenna Henrich, Lauren Hierholzer, Rachel Johnson, Erika Overbeck, Bree Schrader, and Lauren Stevens were honored on the first team for a third straight year. Courtney Cox, Annie Jaska and Gretta Smith and were all recognized for the second time on the first team. Mariah Kelly picked up the third first-team honor of her career, after being recognized in 2011 and 2012. Meanwhile, Haleigh Blackwell and Peyton Thomas were selected for the first time on the first-team.

Sofia Pitouli earned the first second-team nod of her career.

Two of those student-athletes, Tijerina and Hegarty, were among 15 runners across the conference that was nominated with a 4.0 grade point average.

A total of 36 student-athletes were honored on the men's team, while 70 student-athletes make up the women's team. Ninety-one of the 106 selections are first team honorees.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
