Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement:
"It was a great way to start the season. Anytime we hold a team to 39 points and 21% field goal percentage and everybody scores, 30 field goals, 23 are assisted -- there are a lot of positives. We've still got a long way to go and a lot of things to work on. Our schedule will show us more after we play South Carolina -- a very good team -- on the road will show us just what areas we need to work on. But it was a great start, and I'm very pleased with tonight."
On Lester Medford getting hot with the threes:
"Lester and Deng [Deng] -- I don't know if they can do 13-for-16 every night, but if they can we'll be very happy. I think again, with all our new players, they play well at times in practice and they haven't played well. You're always anxious to see how things work out when the lights come on. I thought both of them played really well. Everyone contributed and did some positive things."
On Deng Deng in the second half:
"He got in a nice roll and was really feeding off the crowd. The student section was great. He's played well in practice. He hasn't been 8-for-9 every day in practice but a lot of positive things happened for him today."
Junior Deng Deng
On how his first game for Baylor felt:
"I would say it feels really good. The first half was really tough for me. I got in foul trouble but I spoke to Rico [Gathers] and he told me to forget about the fouls and to just go play my game so I'm just thankful."
On his energy in the second half:
"Kenny [Chery] throwing me that lob got my hyped up. I think I started making it go after that. It was just coming to me. Kenny and I had eye contact and then I just went."
Junior Lester Medford
On his threes:
"The shots were just there and my team did a great job moving the ball. We created gaps and made good passes and people knocked down shots."
On sharing point guard with Kenny:
"Kenny is a phenomenal guard to play with. We learn from each other every day. Playing with a guy that plays that hard makes it more comfortable for me. I can tell when he gets tired and I take the ball from him and take the pressure off him and when I get tired he can take the pressure off me."
MCNEESE STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
McNeese State Head Coach Dave Simmons
Opening Statement:
"The biggest thing is I thought we were going to have to shoot the basketball really well. That was one of our weaknesses last year - being able to shoot the ball from the perimeter, and that was one of our weaknesses tonight. I give credit to Baylor. We knew they were going to run zone and our shooters didn't hit shots. Basically, that was the story of the game. You have got to hit shots in this game. When you are shooting 21% from the field you are not going to beat anyone. I told the guys I wasn't disappointed in their effort. We just didn't shoot the ball very well tonight and obviously we have got to shoot the ball better to be in most games, but Baylor played well. I thought their kids played hard. They rebounded well, and they hit shots and that was basically the difference in the game to me."
On three-pointers not falling:
"Our three-point shooters didn't hit shots. It could have been we have young kids, and they could have been a little nervous in this type of environment. But we have been in tough environments before. I think we got our confidence shaken a little bit because those shots in practice will fall. Baylor has some long wings. I think that altered some shots and we didn't follow through on them. I think we had some kids that dropped their heads a little when they didn't hit shots they normally hit."
On what he saw from Baylor:
"They are very athletic. They are long. I think as Scott [Drew] said they are trying to figure out their team chemistry-wise and we are trying to do the same thing. We started a sophomore point and backup point is a freshman. We moved Kevin Hardy back to the wing and we just didn't get enough scoring, especially from our starters. They didn't score the ball. I had two of my seniors go 0-for-5 and 0-for-6 in the first half. That was probably in a nutshell the difference because you look at the older kids to lead. You know the young kids when they go in are going to make a few mistakes, but they played hard. I can't go back and say the effort wasn't there. We just didn't make shots and when you don't make shots you are going to struggle in every aspect of the game."
