Sept. 11, 2014 WACO, Texas - After a weekend off from competition, the Baylor men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action on Saturday at the UTA Season Opener at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The women will run first at 8 a.m., followed by the men approximately 20 minutes later. Both groups will run 5k races.
The Lady Bears will be without several top runners for the meet including Alex Davis, Ann-Marie Dunlap, Rachel Johnson, Mariah Kelly and Maggie Montoya. After winning the Bear Twilight Invitational in their last meet out, the women will be led by Peyton Thomas, Madie Zimmerman and Bree Schrader.
"Our girls have put in a lot of good work this past week, so I am excited to see where some of them are at," head coach Todd Harbour said.
On the men's side, the Bears will be more at full strength with only Matt Galvin and JR Hardy not expected to run. The men took third at the Bear Twilight Invitational two weeks ago and were led by freshman Eric Anderson, who placed fifth individually.
"Our men have been training really hard these past few weeks," assistant coach Jon Capron said. "We are excited that it is going to be a short little race and some our guys that are in good shape from their high school days, but maybe not in 8K shape, get a chance to see how fast they really are."
Men's and women's teams from UT Arlington, TCU and North Texas, as well as the SMU women's squad, will be competing.
Both the men's and women's squads will be in action next week at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
