BAYLOR POSTGAME NOTES
BAYLOR HEAD COACH Scott Drew Opening Statement ... "I thought Kansas did a great job executing in the second half, and defensively we can't allow 72 percent field goal shooting and win games in the second half. We have to be better. As far as free-throw shooting, I'm proud of the strides we made there. We have to continue to work on layups. If we can finish layups, we'll be in a different position. I loved the team's effort and fight. It was a great Big 12 game. We have to get better. That's the good thing about the Big 12; it's on to the next one."
On how Kansas attacked the defense: "Well, first they made some shots. They were 3-for-6 from three, and we had a couple breakdowns. If you're shooting 16-for-22, you have to make some shots. There are a couple guys who made some shots that we felt comfortable with them taking, so credit them with making them. At the same time, those breakdowns that we had, like when Selden hit that three, that can't happen."
On how the game ended: "I think [Prince] wasn't able to grab it cleanly, but at least he made a great outlet. Then Kenny bobbled it, so with two bobbles in 3.9 [seconds] you don't have time for bobbles. If you have two more seconds or make one of the two layups with ten seconds, you have a different feeling right now. We didn't, and we have to get better at finishing with length and contact. Because that's what the Big 12's about, and that's something we've been trying to work on. We've gotten a little bit better, but not good enough to beat a team like Kansas. Again, they made shots: credit them. They made nice adjustments in the second half. We did some things that hurt us. We didn't execute some things we should've executed. We'll get better, and we have a chance for a quality wins every game."
BAYLOR GUARD Kenny Chery On the loss ... "It's pretty hard to grasp. The guys played their heart out there. I couldn't ask for more as a leader and as a senior, I couldn't have asked for more of these guys, and everybody played their heart out there today, there were just some mental mistakes at the end that cost us the game.
On his aggressiveness ... "I just wanted to come out and be aggressive. We lost a tough one at Oklahoma, just wanted to be aggressive and help my team in certain ways and try to be a leader. Just want to win, just wanna win."
BAYLOR FORWARD Rico Gathers On using last year's tough start as experience for 14-15 ... "I felt like we played a tougher first half then we did last year. And, how close we're playing everyone, that helps us rather than hurts us. I look forward to TCU, I think these two losses are going to motivate us for our first win Saturday. We are seeing how good this team really is. I feel like we can either take this like a punch in the face and mope, like we did last year, or we can use this as motivation and reach our limit as a team. It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish."
KANSAS HEAD COACH BILL SELF On attacking BU defense... "You always want to make shots, but statistically they are great at defending the 3-ball. We were 5-17, and that's not any good. We thought that we were going to be able to get the ball into the middle of the paint and get flat and attack them that way. We didn't do a great job of that tonight either. Hopefully we will be a little more prepared when they come to our place."
On strategy of fouling at the end... "I think there was about eight seconds left, and that's a nervous time because if you foul before they get past half court and get into their shot, then now they don't have to miss free throws because there is still five seconds left. Looking back now I think we should've just played it out with the way Gathers was playing. The risk is if Chery doesn't make the second free throw, then you have Gathers there to clean the glass. He dominated us on the glass the whole night."
KANSAS FORWARD WAYNE SELDEN, JR. On Baylor defense... "They're long and they really get out and guard you. You really don't know who's guarding you or who to make guard you at certain times. On top of that they're very fast and quick to the ball."
