Oct. 29, 2015 WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor women's golf All-American sophomore Dylan Kim is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to remove a benign leg tumor, head coach Jay Goble announced Thursday.
"Dylan is a huge part of our team and playing without her for an extended period of time is going to be difficult, but this was an issue that needed to be addressed immediately," Goble said. "She had the surgery on Oct. 20 and isn't able to put weight on her leg for at least a month, so she's going to be out for a quite a while."
Kim plans to return to the Baylor campus next week. Her rehab could take up to six months, and if she's unable to return this season, Kim is eligible for a medical hardship waiver ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" also known as a medical redshirt.
"I'm not going to put her in the lineup until both Dylan and her doctor tell me she's good to go," Goble said. "Even when she's physically able she may not be where she needs to be mentally, so this is going to be a real challenge, but I know she's up to it."
Kim became the second All-American in program history last season when she helped Baylor to a national runner-up finish after enrolling during the semester break. She posted the third-best single-season stroke average in program history at 73.08, while playing 25 rounds over nine tournaments.
Kim tied for fifth and helped Baylor claim its first-ever conference title at the 2015 Big 12 Championship, and she guided Baylor to its first-ever regional title by placing third at the NCAA San Antonio Regional. She then shot even-par 288 over four rounds to finish in fourth place in the at the NCAA Medal Championship, and she went 2-0-1 in match play to help Baylor to second place nationally.
Baylor has played its last two events without Kim in the lineup. The Bears wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with the inaugural East Lake Cup, which runs Monday and Tuesday at Atlanta's East Lake Country Club.
