THE RUNDOWN
LAWRENCE, Kan.
- Baylor soccer suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime loss to Kansas at Rock Chalk Park Friday evening. The Jayhawks (7-5-1, 2-1-0) scored the golden goal with just seven seconds remaining to hand the Bears (7-5-1, 2-1-0) their first loss in seven matches.

The Bears had plenty of scoring chances and just missed on a few. In the game's first 10 minutes, Precious Akanyirige just missed on a redirected shot in the keeper's box. Later in the first half, Lauren Piercy missed a goal to the left post by less than three feet. Ashley York hit the left post and also had a shot deflected by KU's keeper and off the crossbar in the second half.

After a great diving save by BU keeper Sara Martinson that kept the match alive in the middle of the second overtime period, the game came down to the last few seconds. A Baylor foul gave Kansas a free kick from 30 yards out in BU territory. Liana Salazar's kick was then headed in by Parker Roberts in the box through traffic with seven seconds left.

Baylor Bear Foundation Recap
By Jerry Hill

Seven seconds from at least escaping with a scoreless tie, the Baylor soccer team suffered its first conference loss in the most gut-wrenching fashion Friday night at Rock Chalk Park.

When Baylor was whistled for a foul with less than 20 seconds left in the second overtime, the referee stopped the clock after one of the BU players kicked the ball away, giving the Kansas Jayhawks time to set up for the last shot.

Liana Salazar, held to just one shot on goal for the night, hit a free kick from about 30 yards hat was slightly redirected by Parker Roberts passed diving goalkeeper Sara Martinson as Kansas (7-5-1, 2-1-0) pulled out the 1-0, double-overtime win.

"To lose in that fashion with seven seconds left in the match is a tough pill to swallow, for sure," said Baylor head coach Paul Jobson, whose team fell to 7-5-1 overall and tied with Kansas at 2-1-0 in Big 12 play. "But I'm proud of the girls. I really couldn't have asked any more of them tonight. They put it all out there."

Martinson finished with a career-high six saves and came within seven seconds of her fourth consecutive shutout. None was any bigger than her save with 2:14 left in the second overtime when she dove to her right to snag a kick from Tayler Estrada off a corner by Salazar.

"I couldn't have done what I did if I didn't have the girls in front of me," Martinson said. "Play after play, it was an entire team effort. You saw Bri Campos shutting down one of the best players in the country (Salazar). You saw Sarah King tracking back as a freshman. You saw Lindsay Burns stepping up. I could go through the entire team."

Campos and Salazar went toe-to-toe the on both ends of the field. Salazar was hit with a yellow card when she tackled Campos from behind on a breakaway attempt at the 76:58 mark in the second half.

Ashley York's free kick from 25 yards out hit the left post, one of several close calls by the Bears. Baylor finished with a 22-18 edge in shots, but the Jayhawks led in shots on goal, 7-5.

"With their (defensive) system, it's hard to find the gaps that we're used to," said freshman Lauren Piercy, who had a game-high seven shots and one on goal. "But once Kansas started getting tired, we started finding more toward our feet. That's when we started getting more shots off. The thing about shooting and being a forward is not just to score but to at least get shots off. I feel that also gets the team going and builds our confidence to attack people more."

Piercy had a flurry of three shots in the last 5 ½ minutes of the first overtime period, with Kansas goalkeeper Maddie Dobyns coming up with a save on the last one. And she also had Baylor's only shot attempt in the second OT period, one that was blocked by a defender.

"Listen, I thought we played really, really well today," Jobson said. "I thought we brought the type of game we wanted to bring out here. For the majority of the game, I thought we were the better. But this game is that way. It just comes down to us hitting the post, I don't know, three or four times. . . . One or two inches the other way, and we're off the field a lot earlier."

The game "got chippy at times," with a total of 41 fouls called ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" 15 on the Jayhawks and 26 on the Bears ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" and five yellow cards. That was the most fouls called on a Kansas opponent since 1998.

"It was physical, but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary for our conference," Jobson said. "Every conference game is a rivalry game, so it can get a little chippy at times. But there wasn't anything real crazy."

Piercy said the fouls and physical play are just "things you have to play through. Be the best you can be and keep your head and play with great effort."

After playing four of their last five games on the road, the Bears return home to host Oklahoma (8-4-2, 1-0-2) at 8 p.m. next Friday and 13th-ranked Texas Tech (8-1-4, 1-0-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in televised matchups at Betty Lou Mays Field.

"I'd definitely say this is a hard way to end," Martinson said. "But props to Kansas, they fought just as hard as we did. We have to learn from it. We learn that those last minutes are when you really have to bite down. . . . We'll use it and move on and get ready for the next one."

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"I'm very proud of the effort the girls gave tonight. I couldn't have asked for more. Losing with seven seconds left is a tough pill to swallow. I thought defensively we were great. It comes down to the little things. We hit the post a few times and missed a few shots by a few inches that could have let us off the field a little earlier with a better result. Winning on the road is tough and even tougher in conference play. This was a hard-fought match on both sides by two good teams." - Head Coach Paul Jobson
