BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the play of Brown and Mompremier...
"I was looking at their minutes played and I thought it was pretty productive. Sometimes when you play small teams who run that particular kind of offense, it makes it difficult for big girls to defend. So offensively I was more pleased than defensively."
On the Northwestern offensive matchupà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We talked about it at halftime and we came back with a smaller lineup who could move and stay with them on that motion type of offense, and I think they only scored four points in the third quarter. Some of that is freshmen, some of that is size, having to go out there and defend and move all the time. But we have a team, where we can go small or we can go big. We just rotated players until we could find a better defensive group."
On if Nina Davis finds it difficult to score from the three positionà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"She probably does, I think when she's at the four she's a mismatch for a lot of teams because she's smaller, she can run the floor, and I think at the three people match up with her better. Nina's the ultimate team player, I can move her down there and she can play the four the entire year, but then I don't develop her and then I don't develop [Cave], and quite frankly, until Prince gets well, I'm searching for a three player."
On the large advantage on scoring in the paintà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Well it should be that way. It should be that way in a lot of games because we're big. Biggest team I've ever coached, top to bottom and you know how big Griner was. But she didn't have this many bigs around her, and they're a different kind of bigs. You have Kristina and you have Kalani, who are more back to basket players, but they can shoot the mid-range jumper at the foul line. Then you have the athletic bigs, like Beatrice, [Cave] and Szczepanski, who can run the floor. We've got to have the right people on the floor at the right time."
Freshman Kalani Brown
On if it was difficult guarding NSU's offenseà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Somewhat. I just have to stand out and move my feet, standing out for tall people can be hard sometimes. It's just something you have to do."
On the guards' ability to get her the ball insideà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It's very easy. Going to it when it's open I guess."
NORTHWESTERN STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Co-Head Coach Brooke Stoehr
On takeaways from the gameà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It was great for our freshmen bigs to experience big-girl basketball. For us, you go into these games asking ourselves how we are going to execute what we are trying to do. We can't guard 6'5 and 6'7 effectively, I mean just look at the points in the paint. We told our kids before the game, even if you're in the correct position, they're still going to lob it over your head. That's going to happen, but what are we doing to control what we can do going forward when we get to conference play."
On Baylor's pressà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We have a pretty good point guard, Janelle Perez, who can handle a lot of pressure. She had six assists, two turnovers, and has had a really good career. She's been our main stay at the point, and I need to see how these younger kids are going to handle that. We need them going into conference play when the pressure is on. You never know when she's going to pick up a foul, or we have to take her out, or she gets hurt. Who do we have that is going to be able to handle that type of pressure? If you can handle it in an environment like this, you're probably going to be able to handle it well in conference play."
