THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball completed opening weekend with a clean sweep of No. 13 Cal Poly after a 6-0 win Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (3-0) used three underclassmen pitchers to combine for the shutout of the Mustangs (0-3).
The BU offense went to work early for a 5-0 lead after just three innings to help put away Cal Poly for the third straight game. After a Duncan Wendel single and Cameron Miller reaching base via error, West Tunnell smashed a two-run double to right-center on the first pitch for a quick 2-0 second-inning lead.
In the third, Logan Brown led off with a walk. Adam Toth followed with an RBI triple to dead center and Wendel backed it up with an RBI single to left to give the Bears the 5-0 edge.
Tunnell cashed in another run in the fifth on a sac fly after walks by Wendel and Miller.
In his first appearance and start, freshman Theron Kay (1-0) showed good recovery ability as he earned the win, allowing no runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in four innings. He allowed a runner in scoring position in three of his four innings but was able to escape unscathed each time.
Fellow freshman Troy Montemayor took over for BU on the mound after Kay and pitched two strong scoreless frames, allowing just a walk with one strikeout. Daniel Castano then ate up the final three innings to earn his first career save, surrendering two hits and no runs with two strikeouts.
Cal Poly starter Justin Calomeni (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings.

TWEET OF THE GAME
TOP QUOTE
"We had freshman, freshman and sophomore on the mound today, with [Theron] Kay making his debut. Troy [Montemayor] doesn't lack for confidence. I don't know if all of our pitchers turn around and look at the radar gun but Troy does - he was motivated by it - but he pitched well. I like a lot of what he does, he's got a little bit of moxie about him, and when he got out there and was successful, I think he energized the whole club." - BU head coach Steve Smith
