BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
BAYLOR HEAD COACH Scott Drew Opening Statement ... "First and foremost I am the most pleased with the turnovers. We had eight turnovers against this team, which is outstanding. This has to be their season low in turnovers that they have given up this year. Twenty four baskets with 18 assists is outstanding so there were a lot of great things. This was a team effort and team win. We played a good West Virginia team like all of the teams in the Big 12 are. We need to keep this thing rolling and get rested and recovered for Big Monday."
On the ball movement ... "No question, I thought we played very unselfishly. Anytime a coach can have 18 assists and eight turnovers on 24 made baskets is great, unselfish basketball. The crowd gave us a great lift today and was outstanding. For those who attend games all the time, you could see the difference in the energy level today. When the crowd is going it really helps us get active defensively. We got a lot of deflections in the first half especially. I can't thank the crowd enough for their assist today getting out and driving in this weather."
On why this team is on a roll ... "I think that we are just playing very good basketball, making shots and making the extra pass. The only thing that we can control is the shot selection, and it has been very good. We've also taken care of the basketball. Our rebounding wasn't as good as we needed to be tonight, but we still had 22 to their 15 on second-chance points so we were more efficient when we got them. As we know, good defense leads to an easy offense."
On Rico Gathers playing a physical game today ... "He can handle the pounding though. He's one guy that isn't going to be too sore. The good thing is that Rico likes a physical game, and that's what you get from West Virginia. He and Devin (Williams) are two of the best rebounders in the country. They are one and two in our conference for a reason. He's a very physically strong player, but it takes passion and heart to get the rebounds that he does."
BAYLOR FORWARD Taurean Prince On why they have been successful against West Virginia this season ... "We have people that can handle the ball well as well as handle pressure. We know what to do with the ball when we are double-teamed. Coach Drew draws up great schemes and implements them well into our fast break offense. We are able to execute and capitalize."
On the Big Monday matchup against Texas ... "It's going to be very difficult. They are a long, athletic team. We have to pick up what we do defensively and be on top of things. We need to get our hands up and move our feet. We have a pretty good scheme against Texas based on their personnel, so we have to execute and play Baylor basketball."
BAYLOR FORWARD ROYCE O'NEAL On the unselfish ball-movement ... "Like you said, everyone on this team is unselfish. In practice we always look for one more pass. If you call one more and we pass it we know (whoever is shooting) will make the shot. We trust each other so that's why we pass it. Sharing the ball is key. We had 18 assists and eight turnovers which is what we needed to do today."
On the end of the season momentum feeling like last year's... "We got hot last season towards the end of conference play, which is always a good thing when you are going into the conference tournament and the NCAA tournament. We just have to keep it up and keep playing together as a team."
WEST VIRGINIA HEAD COACH BOB HUGGINS On the injury status of Gary Browne and Juwan Staten ... "I haven't talk to the doctor about Gary, I think the word on Juwan is day to day."
On playing without both Gary Browne and Juwan Staten ... "Daxter Miles Jr. and Jevon Carter definitely haven't been out there by themselves, the way they were today."
On adjusting to playing with inexperienced PGs ... "Gary went down, and we just started throwing the ball to them. We had nine turnovers the first half, and most of them were live-ball turnovers. That killed us in the first half, you can't make live-ball turnovers. We just had guys out there that had not been out there really or had not been out there by themselves. It is hard to make any adjustments, that being said we had guys who are veteran guys, and I guess for us veteran guys are sophomores. They did not do what we really needed to do, they were just kind of running around, we didn't do a very good job."
On how not having both PGs affected West Virginia's press defense ... "Well that affects our press, but honestly it affects our press when they shoot that many free throws, it kills your aggression. We can't foul, we have to pressure without fouling. I think when you get a continual parade at the foul line, you are backing off rather then doing what we normally do. We make dumb fouls, the dumb fouls kind of add up, we just have to get smarter."
On not getting the 50-50 balls ... "Well if we would have dove on the first one Gary probably wouldn't have gotten hurt. Instead of just trying to run and pick it up, if we would have just dove on it. Which is what we have been doing, our ball security wasn't very good and we just didn't get the balls the way we normally get the balls."
