Sophomore forward Nina Davis is one of five John R. Wooden Award Women's All Americans the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced on Monday.
Selected by hundreds of national college basketball media members and the Award's former winners, the All American team is made up of five student-athletes who were the top vote-getters in the quest to earn college basketball's most prestigious honor. In addition to Davis, the team consists of Jewell Loyd (Notre Dame), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Connecticut), and Breanna Stewart (Connecticut).
Davis' selection marks the fifth straight season that a Baylor Lady Bear has been a finalist for the award and claimed Wooden All American status. Brittney Griner was a four-year finalist and won the award in 2012 and '13 while Odyssey Sims was a three-time finalist and All American (2012, '13, '14).
The 5-11 Memphis, Tenn., native led Baylor a 33-4 record and to the NCAA Championship Elite Eight where she was named to the Oklahoma City Regional All-Tournament team. Davis, the Big 12 Player of the Year, finished the season averaging 21.1 points and 8.3 rebounds a game while hitting 58.4 percent of her shots.
Davis and the other four finalists are invited to Los Angeles to attend The Wooden Award ceremony where the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners will be announced. For the first time in award history, the announcement will be televised live on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, from Club Nokia in Los Angeles as part of ESPN College Basketball Awards Show Presented by Wendy's.
Voting was from March 17-24, and voters could take into consideration the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. As insisted upon by Coach Wooden at the Award's creation 39 years ago, All Americans have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation and are maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
