March 8, 2015 IRVING, Texas - A trio of Baylor basketball players were named to the 2015 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 teams, as voted by the league's coaches and announced by the conference office Sunday.
Junior forward Rico Gathers was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while senior guard Kenny Chery and junior forward Taurean Prince picked up Second-Team honors. Additionally, earned the Big 12 Sixth Man Award, and Gathers was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.
Baylor was the only team to place three players on the Big 12 first and second teams, and the Bears did so despite having no players on the Preseason All-Big 12 Teams. Gathers was the only All-Big 12 First Team selection who wasn't named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
The official All-Big 12 awards are chosen by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. Baylor has now had at least one player named to one of the three coaches' All-Big 12 teams in each of the last eight seasons, racking up 16 total honors in that span. Prior to the last eight years, BU had four players named to one of the three coaches' All-Big 12 teams over the league's first 11 years.
Chery, Gathers and Prince were all first-time honorees from the league's coaches, though the media recognized Chery as an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection last season.
Gathers is the fourth player in program history to be named All-Big 12 First Team by the league's coaches, joining Terry Black (2001), Curtis Jerrells (2008) and LaceDarius Dunn (2011). Prince and Chery are the seventh and eighth different players named to the coaches' Second Team, joining Brian Skinner (1997, 1998), Dunn (2010), Ekpe Udoh (2010), Perry Jones III (2011), Quincy Acy (2012) and Pierre Jackson (2012, 2013).
Prince is Baylor's third winner of the Big 12 Sixth Man Award, following Dunn (2009) and Acy (2011). Gathers is the fourth BU player on the coaches' All-Defensive team, joining Udoh (2010), Acy (2012) and Isaiah Austin (2014).
Gathers leads the Big 12 with 362 rebounds, 116 more than any other league player. He also leads the league with 16 double-doubles, which are twice as many as anyone else in the league, 152 offensive rebounds and 210 defensive rebounds. He ranks third nationally with 11.7 rebounds per game, and with 11.6 points per game, he's one of two high-major players nationally averaging a double-double this season.
Chery is averaging 11.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.1 rebounds in a team-high 32.1 minutes per game. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in minutes, sixth in assists, sixth in 3-pointers made, ninth in steals, ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio and 16th in scoring. His scoring average rose to 12.4 points per game in conference play, good for 11th in the league.
Prince's team-leading 14.0 points per game ranks second nationally among all reserves (less than 10 starts). He's also shooting .474 from the field and .407 from 3-point range, while posting 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.9 blocks in 26.3 minutes per game. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage, fifth in field goal percentage, seventh in scoring, seventh in steals, 14th in rebounding and 16th in blocks. His scoring jumped to 15.6 points per game in conference play, good for third in the league.
