March 9, 2015 WACO, Texas - Baylor basketball student-athletes Rico Gathers, Taurean Prince and Kenny Chery picked up All-Big 12 Conference honors from media who cover the league, as announced Monday by the Associated Press.
Gathers was named to the media's All-Big 12 first team, while Prince picked up second-team recognition and Chery was an honorable mention choice. The Bears have now had 14 media All-Big 12 honorees in the last six seasons, with three first-team honorees, seven second-team selections and four honorable mentions since 2010.
Baylor was the only one of four Texas schools in the league to place players on the first or second teams, and the Bears' three total honorees were more than the league's three other Texas schools combined. BU tied Iowa State and Oklahoma for the conference lead with three All-Big 12 players.
The coaches' All-Big 12 teams were announced on Sunday, and the same three Bears were honored, with Gathers on the first team, and Prince and Chery on the second team. Gathers was also named the captain of SI.com's national All-Glue Team on Monday, and Prince was named national Sixth Man of the Year by Bleacher Report on Sunday.
Gathers leads the Big 12 with 362 rebounds, 116 more than any other league player. He also leads the league with 16 double-doubles, which are twice as many as anyone else in the league, 152 offensive rebounds and 210 defensive rebounds. He ranks third nationally with 11.7 rebounds per game, and with 11.6 points per game, he's one of two high-major players nationally averaging a double-double this season.
Chery is averaging 11.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.1 rebounds in a team-high 32.1 minutes per game. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in minutes, sixth in assists, sixth in 3-pointers made, ninth in steals, ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio and 16th in scoring. His scoring average rose to 12.4 points per game in conference play, good for 11th in the league.
Prince's team-leading 14.0 points per game ranks second nationally among all reserves (less than 10 starts). He's also shooting .474 from the field and .407 from 3-point range, while posting 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.9 blocks in 26.3 minutes per game. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage, fifth in field goal percentage, seventh in scoring, seventh in steals, 14th in rebounding and 16th in blocks. His scoring jumped to 15.6 points per game in conference play, good for third in the league.
Joining Gathers on the first team were Kansas' Perry Ellis, Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, Iowa State's Georges Niang and West Virginia's Juwan Staten. Prince was joined on the second team by Oklahoma State's Phil Forte and Le'Bryan Nash, Kansas' Frank Mason and Iowa State's Monte Morris.
Honorable mention choices were Chery, TCU's Kyan Anderson, ISU's Jameel McKay, OU's Ryan Spangler and TaShawn Thomas, Texas' Isaiah Taylor, WVU's Devin Williams and Kansas State's Nino Williams.
No. 4 seed Baylor takes on No. 5 West Virginia at 11:30 a.m. CT Thursday in the first quarterfinal game at the 2015 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The game will be televised on ESPN2 from Kansas City's Sprint Center, with the winner advancing to Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal.
