April 17, 2015 WACO, Texas - The second-ranked Baylor men's tennis team finishes out its regular season by playing No. 16 Texas Tech Saturday at 6 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
"Texas Tech has a really tough place to play with an incredible fan base," head coach Matt Knoll said. "We have a big challenge in front of us." Baylor comes into the match with an overall record of 19-4 and 3-1 mark in Big 12 play. BU is 5-0 in true road contests on the year and 8-2 in matches away from Waco.
The Bears are currently tied for first place in the Big 12 with No. 1 Oklahoma. Both teams have one match remaining with OU hosting OSU Sunday at 1 p.m.
"If they are going to hand out a trophy, we would like to get one," Knoll said. "It is a big deal to win the Big 12. It is the toughest league in the country. We are thrilled to have an opportunity."
In the latest ITA rankings, Julian Lenz is the No. 2 ranked singles player in the country and has a 12-3 record on the season.
Baylor has three other ranked players in singles with Tony Lupieri, Max Tchoutakian, and Mate Zsiga listed at No. 30, 67 and 112 respectively in the latest ITA rankings. Zsiga, a senior, has won seven-straight singles decisions for BU.
The Bears are led in doubles with Lenz joining Diego Galeano to be ranked No. 25. The twosome has moved up to the No. 1 position in BU's lineup, while winning 13 straight decisions and amassing a 16-1 record on the year. Meanwhile, Lupieri teams with Felipe Rios to be ranked No. 43 and Lupieri and Zsiga partner together to form the nation's 58th-best tandem.
BU is 21-1 on the year in doubles points.
Texas Tech (18-6, 2-2 Big 12) hosts the Bears in its regular season finale. Leading the way for Texas Tech is No. 33 Felipe Soares, who has anchored the top spot in the lineup. Soares is 20-12 on the season.
The Red Raiders have two other ranked players with No. 106 sophomore Jolan Cailleau and No. 113 freshman Alex Sendegeya.
The Bears have owned the series against Texas Tech recently, winning three-straight matches over the Red Raiders and 21 of the last 22 contests in the series. Overall, Baylor leads the series, 27-26, but Baylor holds a 21-1 advantage during the Big 12 era.
